Temporal networks of face-to-face human interactions

چکیده
The ever increasing adoption of mobile technologies and ubiquitous services allows to sense human behavior at unprecedented levels of details and scale. Wearable sensors are opening up a new window on human mobility and proximity at the finest resolution of face-to-face proximity. As a consequence, empirical data describing social and behavioral networks are acquiring a longitudinal dimension that brings forth new challenges for analysis and modeling. Here we review recent work on the representation and analysis of temporal networks of face-to-face human proximity, based on large-scale datasets collected in the context of the SocioPatterns collaboration. We show that the raw behavioral data can be studied at various levels of coarse-graining, which turn out to be complementary to one another, with each level exposing different features of the underlying system. We briefly review a generative model of temporal contact networks that reproduces some statistical observables. Then, we shift our focus from surface statistical features to dynamical processes on empirical temporal networks. We discuss how simple dynamical processes can be used as probes to expose important features of the interaction patterns, such as burstiness and causal constraints. We show that simulating dynamical processes on empirical temporal networks can unveil differences between datasets that would otherwise look statistically similar. Moreover, we argue that, due to the temporal heterogeneity of human dynamics, in order to investigate the temporal properties of spreading processes it may be necessary to abandon the notion Alain Barrat Aix Marseille Université, CNRS UMR 7332, CPT, 13288 Marseille, France Université du Sud Toulon-Var, CNRS UMR 7332, CPT, 83957 La Garde, France Data Science Laboratory, ISI Foundation, Torino, Italy e-mail: [email protected] Ciro Cattuto Data Science Laboratory, ISI Foundation, Torino, Italy e-mail: [email protected] 1 ar X iv :1 30 5. 35 32 v1 [ ph ys ic s. so cph ] 1 5 M ay 2 01 3 2 Alain Barrat and Ciro Cattuto of wall-clock time in favour of an intrinsic notion of time for each individual node, defined in terms of its activity level. The role of Membership and Participation in Admissible Virtual Social Networks on Cultural Convergence (Case study: the Young Members of FACE NAMA in Qom)
The appearance of different social media has been very influential in individuals’ life. The most common social networks are virtual social networks which have been fascinated by many users because of a lot of similarities with human society, and communications and interactions which are formed in it. This study investigates the role of membership and participation in virtual social network on ...
متن کاملChallenges Facing Global Health Networks: The NCD Alliance Experience; Comment on “Four Challenges that Global Health Networks Face”
Successful prevention and control of the epidemic of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) cannot be achieved by the health sector alone: a wide range of organisations from multiple sectors and across government must also be involved. This requires a new, inclusive approach to advocacy and to coordinating, convening and catalysing action across civil society, best achieved by a broad-based network. T...
متن کاملModel reproduces individual, group and collective dynamics of human contact networks
Empirical data on the dynamics of human face-to-face interactions across a variety of social venues have recently revealed a number of context-independent structural and temporal properties of human contact networks. This universality suggests that some basic mechanisms may be responsible for the unfolding of human interactions in the physical space. Here we discuss a simple model that reproduc...
متن کاملModels, Entropy and Information of Temporal Social Networks
Temporal social networks are characterized by heterogeneous duration of contacts, which can either follow a power-law distribution, such as in face-to-face interactions, or a Weibull distribution, such as in mobile-phone communication. Here we model the dynamics of face-to-face interaction and mobile phone communication by a reinforcement dynamics, which explains the data observed in these diff...

Automatic analysis of human facial expressions is one of the challenging problems in machine vision systems. It has many applications in human-computer interactions such as, social signal processing, social robots, deceit detection, interactive video and behavior monitoring. In this paper, we develop a new method for automatic facial expression recognition based on facial muscle anatomy and hum...
متن کاملGraph distance for complex networks
Networks are widely used as a tool for describing diverse real complex systems and have been successfully applied to many fields. The distance between networks is one of the most fundamental concepts for properly classifying real networks, detecting temporal changes in network structures, and effectively predicting their temporal evolution. However, this distance has rarely been discussed in th...
