Reversible Cape in Tropical Cyclone Tornado Regimes

چکیده

Tropical cyclone (TC) tornadoes produced by supercells occur in characteristic thermodynamic environments of  rich low-level moisture,  high precipitable water and  commonly (but not always) enhancement to CAPE by diurnal, diabatic surface heating. These factors juxtapose with strong low-level shear magnitudes, high storm-relative helicity and enlarged hodographs to optimize supercellular tornado potential in TCs (e.g., McCaul 1991; Edwards et al. 2012a), especially in areas located north through south-southeast of center (e.g., Edwards 2012 and climatologies cited therein). Nonsupercellular tornadoes also occur in TCs; however, they tend to be less damaging, shorter lived, and often embedded within otherwise supercell-favorable environments (Edwards et al. 2012b).

Convective Modes for Significant Severe Thunderstorms in the Contiguous United States. Part III: Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes

A gridded, hourly, three-dimensional environmental mesoanalysis database at the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), based on objectively analyzed surface observations blended with the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) model-analysis fields and described in Parts I and II of this series, is applied to a 2003–11 subset of the SPC tropical cyclone (TC) tornado records. Distributions of environmental convective ...

Dynamics and Thermodynamics Analysis of Tropical Cyclone Haiyan

Tropical cyclone Haiyan (TCH) that formed over the West Pacific Ocean during 3-11 November 2013 has been investigated using three datasets produced by Japan Meteorology Agency, ECMWF and NCEP. Strength of TCH has been studied using two synoptic parameters of 10-m wind velocity and mean sea level pressure (MSLP). Following, three dynamic parameters including vertical wind shear (VWSH) vector, he...

Nonsupercell Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes: Documentation, Classification and Uncertainties

An ingredients-based approach (e.g., Johns and Doswell 1992) is used in the operational prediction of tornado threat, regardless of whether the favorable environment results from midlatitude or tropical perturbations. Since the majority of tropical cyclone (TC) tornadoes are associated with supercells (Edwards et al. 2012a; hereafter E12), the forecaster typically can focus on the same ingredie...

P 3 . 2 Objective Environmental Analyses and Convective Modes for U . S . Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes from 2003 - 2008

Tropical cyclone (TC) tornado prediction remains a substantial challenge, both on its own and compared to advances made in prognostically relevant understanding of midlatitude supercells in particular. An ingredients-based approach (e.g., Johns and Doswell 1992), used for supercell tornado environments in midlatitudes, likewise can be applied to TCs, focusing on moisture, instability, vertical ...

Compensating regime in axisymmetric vortical flows

Axisymmetric vortices with high level of axial vorticity are considered. Consistency conditions result in so-called compensating regime of the vortical flow. The power laws associated with this regime are applied to a series of vortices of different scales: bathtub vortex, tornadoes and tropical cyclones. Key–Words: vortical flows, bathtub vortex, tornado, tropical cyclone
