Recency Tendency: Responses to Forced-Choice Questions
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present study was conducted to investigate whether forced-choice questions would lead to any particular tendency in young children’s responses. Two experiments were conducted in which 3to 5-year-olds children were shown a short animation and then were asked a set of two-option, forced-choice questions. Consistent findings were obtained: (i) Forced-choice questions influenced children’s responses; (ii) Children displayed a consistent ‘recency tendency.’ That is, they tended to choose the second option in forced-choice questions; (iii) This tendency grew weaker as children aged. The findings suggest that forced-choice questions carry some suggestibility load and can bias children’s responses. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Children’s recency tendency: A cross-linguistic study of Persian, Kurdish and English
In the present cross-linguistic study two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of age and linguistic background on response tendencies of preschoolers toward forced-choice questions. A total of 163 2to 5-year-old children, including 63 Persian speakers, 57 Kurdish speakers and 43 English speakers, were asked a set of forced-choice, two option questions about familiar and unfami...
متن کاملSerial position effects in 2-alternative forced choice recognition: functional equivalence across visual and auditory modalities.
Two experiments examined Ward, Avons, and Melling's (2005) proposition that the serial position function is task, rather than modality, dependent. Specifically, they proposed that for backward testing the 2-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) recognition paradigm is characterised by single-item recency irrespective of the modality of the stimulus presentation. In Experiment 1 the same nonword sequ...
متن کاملGoal-dependent modulation of declarative memory: neural correlates of temporal recency decisions and novelty detection.
Declarative memory allows an organism to discriminate between previously encountered and novel items, and to place past encounters in time. Numerous imaging studies have investigated the neural processes supporting item recognition, whereas few have examined retrieval of temporal information. In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted while subjects engaged...
متن کاملSerial-position effects in preference construction: a sensitivity analysis of the pairwise-competition model
People have a stronger preference for options encountered earlier or later in a sequence than for options in the middle of the sequence. To account for these primacy and recency effects, Mantonakis et al. (2009) sketched a sequential updating mechanism, the pairwise-competition model. We propose a formal instantiation of the model and, using computer simulations, examine how the sizes of the pr...
متن کاملAssessing Interrogative Suggestibility, an adaptation of Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale (GSS): Gender Difference in witnessing an event
Interrogative suggestibility refers to the tendency of individuals to accept suggestive information in an interrogative context. Gudjonsson and Clark (1986) have developed a theoretical model of suggestibility, and contend that suggestibility is mediated by an individual's cognitive abilities, mental state and personality characteristics. In particular, they emphasize the role of coping strateg...
