چکیده

Ladner [18] showed that there are no minimal recursive sets under polynomial-time reductions. Given any recursive set A, Ladner constructs a set B such that B strictly reduces to A but B does not lie in P. The set B does have very long sequences of input lengths of easily computable instances. We examine whether Ladner’s results hold if we restrict ourselves to “uniformly hard languages” which have no long sequences of easily computable instances. Under a hard to disprove assumption, we show that there exists a minimal recursive uniformly hard set under honest many-one polynomial-time reductions.

Network Location Problem with Stochastic and Uniformly Distributed Demands

This paper investigates the network location problem for single-server facilities that are subject to congestion. In each network edge, customers are uniformly distributed along the edge and their requests for service are assumed to be generated according to a Poisson process. A number of facilities are to be selected from a number of candidate sites and a single server is located at each facil...

Some Results on Average-Case Hardness Within the Polynomial Hierarchy

We prove several results about the average-case complexity of problems in the Polynomial Hierarchy (PH). We give a connection among average-case, worst-case, and non-uniform complexity of optimization problems. Specifically, we show that if P is hard in the worst-case then it is either hard on the average (in the sense of Levin) or it is non-uniformly hard (i.e. it does not have small circuits)...

Minimal Concept Identification and Reliability

Identification, by algorithmic devices, of grammars for languages from positive data is a well studied problem. In this paper we are mainly concerned about the learnability of indexed families of uniformly recursive languages. Mukouchi introduced the notion of minimal and reliable minimal concept inference from positive data. He left open a question about whether every indexed family of uniform...

Object Ownership for Dynamic Alias Protection

Interobject references in object-oriented programs allow arbitrary aliases between objects. By breaching objects' encapsulation boundaries, these aliases can make programs hard to understand and especially hard to debug. We propose using an explicit, run-time notion of object ownership to control aliases between objects in dynamically typed languages. Dynamically checking object ownership as a ...

Learning Automatic Families of Languages

A class of languages is automatic if it is uniformly regular using some regular index set for the languages. In this survey we report on work about the learnability in the limit of automatic classes of languages, with some special emphasis to automatic learners.
