The quest for anisotropic moveout

چکیده
There is renewed interest in velocity anisotropy, and publications of researchers outside SEP describe various schemes for estimating anisotropic moveout from seismic data. However, those schemes often face problems in that they commit too early to a particular class of elastic models which may require auxiliary information not available from surface seismic data. In essence, they are model-driven, not data-driven. This distinction has long been understood at SEP, where there is a ten-year record of developing practical schemes for characterizing non-hyperbolic moveout, whatever its cause. In this paper we distil the anisotropic wisdom of our past and outline the key features of a practical estimation procedure. Two data examples illustrate a method for estimating and removing anelliptic moveout in a CMP gather.

Azimuthal anisotropy or lateral velocity variations cause azimuthal variations in moveout velocity which can lead to seismic image degradation if not properly handled. In cases where apparent azimuthally anisotropic moveout is present, a single picked velocity is inadequate to flatten an event on a 3D CMP gather. Conventional velocity analysis techniques require a significant amount of time and...

Oil, gas, and geothermal reservoirs, and overlying strata are often composed of anisotropic rocks. Proper treatment of anisotropy during the processing of seismic data not only helps to avoid distortions in reservoir imaging, but also provides estimates of the anisotropic coefficients, which carry valuable information about lithology and fracture networks. Accurate estimation of the velocity mo...

Seismic methods play an important role in the development of tight fractured reservoirs with substantial spatial variability of fracture density. Here, we apply a comprehensive processing sequence designed for layered azimuthally anisotropic media to wide-azimuth P-wave data acquired over a fractured gas sand formation in the Rulison field, Colorado. The main processing steps include nonhyperbo...

Building accurate interval velocity models is critically important for seismic imaging and amplitude inversion. Here, we adapt the so-called “PP+PS=SS” method to devise an exact technique for constructing the interval traveltime-offset function in a target zone beneath a horizontally layered overburden. The algorithm is designed for arbitrarily anisotropic target layers, but the overburden is a...

Reverse-time migration can accurately image complex geologic structures in anisotropic media. Extended images at selected locations in the earth, i.e. at commonimage-point gathers (CIPs), carry rich information to characterize the angle-dependent illumination and to provide measurements for migration velocity analysis. However, characterizing the anisotropy influence on such extended images is ...
