چکیده

Background: Substances with endocrine disrupting properties are under special consideration in European Union regulations. In 2014 the European Commission published a roadmap which presented four possible options for identifying endocrine disruptors (ED). A further option was proposed by the chemical and crop protection industry. Methods: This case study investigated how natural substances (genistein, caffeine, vitamin D3, sucrose) would possibly be classified under these different options when the focus is on EATS (estrogenic, androgenic, thyroid and steroidogenic) mediated effects on basis of published data. Results: For sucrose no evidence for endocrine disrupting activity could be identified. The phytoestrogen genistein as well as caffeine would possibly be classified as ED, but caffeine only if potency is not regarded. Vitamin D3 does not elicit EATS mediated adverse effects in vivo. Conclusion: This screening approach reveals that substances for which safe use in humans is known from decades of experience might possibly be classified as endocrine disruptors with yet unknown regulatory consequences. The examples show that additional criteria beyond the WHO/IPCS definition for ED might be critical for the final classification of a substance as ED.

Aquatic environments receive significant levels of chemical contaminants generated by human activities. Among these pollutants, we noticed the xenobiotics known as reproductive toxicants and endocrine disruptors. The endocrine disruption in wildlife has been the subject of many reviews and workshops in recent years. Field observations of reproductively abnormal organisms and population declines...

International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Division of Chemistry and the Environment Commission on Water and Soil* Endocrine Disruptors in the Environment

Many chemical substances of natural or anthropogenic origin are suspected or known to be endocrine disruptors, which can influence the endocrine system of life. This observation has led to increased interest on the part of the public and the media, as well as to a steep rise of research activities in the scientific community. New papers and results are presented so fast that it is impossible to...

Scientific Issues Relevant to Setting Regulatory Criteria to Identify Endocrine-Disrupting Substances in the European Union

BACKGROUND Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as exogenous compounds or mixtures that alter function(s) of the endocrine system and consequently cause adverse effects in an intact organism, or its progeny, or (sub)populations. European regulations on pesticides, biocides, cosmetics, and industrial chemicals require the European Commission to establish ...

Topic 2.4 Pharmaceuticals and personal care products: A source of endocrine disruption in the environment?*

A wide variety of chemicals are used in pharmaceuticals. Most of these are already under thorough control for endocrine activity. The main causal agents recognized for endocrine disruption from sewage are substances used in medicine (sex hormones, glucocorticoids, and others), natural substances (estrone and 17β-estradiol), and synthetic estrogens (e.g., 17α-ethinylestradiol). Similar substance...

Occupational exposure and effects on the male reproductive system.

A significant increase in the incidence of male infertility has been described in the international literature, raising questions about its causes. Part of this effect may result from synthetic toxic substances acting on the endocrine system (endocrine disruptors), many of which are routinely used in work processes. We provide a critical review of the specialized literature on work-related chem...
