Membrane Mediated Attraction and Ordered Aggregation of Colloidal Particles Bound to Giant Phospholipid Vesicles

چکیده
We report a light microscopy study of interactions between colloidal particles either chemically bound or physisorbed onto flexible giant vesicle fluid membranes. The particles induce pinched shape deformations of the membrane and are driven to negative curvature regions on nonspherical vesicles. The membrane distortions were found to induce interparticle attraction with a range approximately equal to the particle diameter. Multiple particles decorating fluid membranes aggregate into finitesized two-dimensional close packed aggregates or, unexpectedly, one-dimensional ringlike aggregates. [S0031-9007(99)08522-1]

Capture on High Curvature Region: Aggregation of Colloidal Particle Bound to Giant Phospholipid Vesicles
A very recent observation on the membrane mediated attraction and ordered aggregation of colloidal particles bound to giant phospholipid vesicles (I. Koltover, J. O. Rädler, C. R. Safinya, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 1991(1999)) is investigated theoretically within the frame of Helfrich curvature elasticity theory of lipid bilayer fluid membrane. Since the concave or waist regions of the vesicle posse...

متن کاملAsymmetrical Polyhedral Configuration of Giant Vesicles Induced by Orderly Array of Encapsulated Colloidal Particles
Giant vesicles (GVs) encapsulating colloidal particles by a specific volume fraction show a characteristic configuration under a hypertonic condition. Several flat faces were formed in GV membrane with orderly array of inner particles. GV shape changed from the spherical to the asymmetrical polyhedral configuration. This shape deformation was derived by entropic interaction between inner partic...
متن کاملEffect of engineered TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles on erythrocytes, platelet-rich plasma and giant unilamelar phospholipid vesicles
BACKGROUND Massive industrial production of engineered nanoparticles poses questions about health risks to living beings. In order to understand the underlying mechanisms, we studied the effects of TiO2 and ZnO agglomerated engineered nanoparticles (EPs) on erythrocytes, platelet-rich plasma and on suspensions of giant unilamelar phospholipid vesicles. RESULTS Washed erythrocytes, platelet-ri...
