Relating fractal dimension with roughness parameters in brass turning

چکیده
The present work describes the evaluation of the conventional roughness parameters and fractal dimensions of the surface profiles generated by turning of brass with different machining conditions such as depth of cut, work-piece speed and feed rate. The surface roughness parameters on the generated-turned surfaces were measured with a stylus-type profilometer and processed through the dedicated advanced surface finish analysis software Talyprofile for evaluation of the roughness parameters and fractal dimension. Parameters used in the present investigation are: Vertical parameters – Ra (CLA, m) and Rq (RMS, m), Transverse parameters – Rsm (mean line peak spacing, m), Peak shape and amplitude parameters – Rsk (skewness), Rku (kurtosis) and Fractal parameter – D (fractal dimension). The significant machining parameters for different roughness parameters and fractal dimension are found using ANOVA. The measured values of conventional roughness parameters and fractal dimension are correlated by non-linear regression analysis using fifth order polynomial model.

Pore surface fractal dimension of sol-gel derived nanoporous SiO2-ZrO2 membrane
In this work, SiO2 –ZrO2 mixed oxides was prepared by the polymeric sol–gel route. The characterization of pore structure, which determines the permeation process of membrane, is of great importance. So far, most investigations have focused on such pore structure as specific surface area and pore size distribution, but the surface fractal, the important parameter reflecting the roughness of por...

Gear’s normal contact stiffness played an important role in the mechanical equipment. In this paper, the M-B fractal model is modified and the contact surface coefficient is put forward to set up the fractal model, considering the influence of friction, which could be used to calculate accurately the involute arc cylindrical gears’ normal contact stiffness based on the fractal theory and Hertz ...
متن کاملMeasurement of Perceptual Roughness in Fractal Surfaces
In this paper we present an investigation into visually perceived surface roughness. First we present psychophysical evidence that suggests that there is a simple relationship between perceived roughness and two well known surface parameters: fractal dimension and rms roughness. And that neither are good estimators, on there own, of perceived roughness. Second we present a measurement model for...
متن کاملExperimental Study & Modeling of Surface Roughness in Turning of Hardened AISI 4340 Steel Using Coated Carbide Inserted
Turning of hardened steels using a single point cutting tool has replaced the cylindrical grinding now as it offers attractive benefits in terms of lower equipment costs, shorter set up time, fewer process setups, higher material removal rate, better surface quality and elimination of cutting fluids compared to cylindrical grinding. In order to obtain desired surface quality by machining, pr...

The current experimental study is to investigate the effects of process parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut) on performance characteristics (surface roughness, machining force and flank wear) in hard turning of AISI 4340 steel with multilayer CVD (TiN/TiCN/Al2O3) coated carbide insert. Combined effects of cutting parameter (v, f, d) on performance outputs (Ra, Fm and VB) ar...
