Methods: Thirty patients (28 males and 2 females, aged between 31 and 75 with a mean age of 52.3 years) with newly-diagnosed oral cancer were enrolled in this study. The FDG PET and MIBI SPECT examinations were performed in all patients before operation. The time interval between these two examinations was within 3 days. The diagnostic accuracy for detecting cervical lymph node metastases was based on surgical results or comparing the results of CT and/or MRI and physical findings. Both FDG PET and MIBI SPECT images were interpreted by at least two nuclear medicine specialists. Results: The sensitivities of FDG PET and MIBI SPECT were 93.3% and 83.3%, respectively, for the detection of primary oral cancer. In the detection of the lymph node involvement, the sensitivities of FDG PET and MIBI SPECT were 83.3% and 27.8%, respectively, while the specificities were 81.8% and 95.4%, respectively. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the sensitivity of both FDG PET and MIBI SPECT modalities were good for the detection of primary oral cancer, although FDG PET had better sensitivity than MIBI SPECT. In the detection of lymph node involvement, MIBI SPECT had much lower sensitivity but showed better specificity than those of FDG PET.

A rare case of primary malignant melanoma of cervix with metastasis to inguinal lymph node detected on 18F-FDG PET-CT scan

Primary malignant melanoma of uterine cervix is extremely rare malignancy with very few case published reports. This neoplasm is having poor prognosis, so early diagnosis, staging and treatment is of extreme importance. 18F-FDG PET-CT (18F-labeled fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission computed tomography) scan is an established modality to determine exact extent of disea...

Role of pathologic prognostic factors in breast cancer patients with isolated bone metastasis and relationship between SUVmax and prognostic factors

Introduction: 18F-FDG PET/CT provides very effective results in detecting metastases of breast cancer. In our study, we investigated the relationship between maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) and prognostic pathologic factors in breast cancer cases with isolated bone metastasis and whether there was any difference in terms of prognostic pathologic factors betwee...

F-18-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography compared to technetium-99m hexakis-2-methoxyisobutyl isonitrile single photon emission chest tomography in the diagnosis of indeterminate lung lesions.

BACKGROUND (18)FDG-PET plays a significant role in diagnosing malignancy of lung lesions but remains an expensive test available at a limited number of sites in Italy. OBJECTIVE We prospectively compare the diagnostic accuracy of (99m)Tc-MIBI- SPECT and (18)FDG-PET in patients with indeterminate lung lesions to demonstrate that (99m)Tc-MIBI-SPECT may be considered as a valid alternative when ...

Diagnostic performance of 18F-FDG PET-CT in patients presenting with secondary neck nodes from an unknown primary

Introduction: Clinical examination and even anatomical imaging may fail to identify primary site of malignancy in patients presenting with cervical nodal metastasis. 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Computed Tomography (18F-FDG PET-CT) is known to overcome the limitations of anatomic imaging. Methods: Sixty-three (63) patient...

FDG PET in the management of lung cancer

We describe a patient with newly diagnosed limy cancer. Staging was performed with CT and mediastinoscopy. FDG PET scan was performed and confirmed increased metabolic activity in the primary tumor as well as the hilar lymph node. Seven months after initial presentation, the patient was found to have two lytic lesions in the pelvis on plain radiograph. Hone scan was negative but PET demon...
