Increased Ca buffering enhances Ca-dependent process

چکیده

The title for this Perspectives article must have a misprint – surely, it should say, ‘Increased Ca buffering diminishes Ca-dependent process’. In fact, the title is correct, as shown in the startling results reported in a remarkable study appearing in this issue of The Journal of Physiology (Rozov et al. 2001). The venerable Neher and Sakmann team has rejoined forces, combining the talents of the two Max-PlanckInstitutes in Göttingen and Heidelberg to analyse totally counterintuitive results: perfusing presynaptic neurons with exogenous BAPTA can enhance synaptic facilitation.

IQ-motif proteins influence intracellular free Ca2+ in hippocampal neurons through their interactions with calmodulin.

Calmodulin (CaM) is most recognized for its role in activating Ca(2+)-CaM-dependent enzymes following increased intracellular Ca(2+). However, CaM's high intracellular concentration indicates CaM has the potential to play a significant role as a Ca(2+) buffer. Neurogranin (Ng) is a small neuronal IQ-motif-containing protein that accelerates Ca(2+) dissociation from CaM. In cells that contain hi...

Luminal Ca Controls Termination and Refractory Behavior of Ca -Induced Ca Release in Cardiac Myocytes

Despite extensive research, the mechanisms responsible for the graded nature and early termination of Ca -induced Ca release (CICR) from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in cardiac muscle remain poorly understood. Suggested mechanisms include cytosolic Ca -dependent inactivation/adaptation and luminal Ca -dependent deactivtion of the SR Ca release channels/ryanodine receptors (RyRs). To explore ...

Endogenous Calcium Buffering Capacity of Substantia 14 Nigral Dopamine Neurons

42 43 Dopamine (DA) containing cells from the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) play a 44 major role in the initiation of movement. Loss of these cells results in Parkinson’s 45 disease (PD). Changes in [Ca]i elicit several events in DA cells, including spike 46 afterhyperpolarizations (AHPs) and subthreshold oscillations underlying autonomous 47 firing. Continuous Ca load due to Ca-dependen...

Compensatory regulation of Cav2.1 Ca2+ channels in cerebellar Purkinje neurons lacking parvalbumin and calbindin D-28k.

Ca(v)2.1 channels regulate Ca(2+) signaling and excitability of cerebellar Purkinje neurons. These channels undergo a dual feedback regulation by incoming Ca(2+) ions, Ca(2+)-dependent facilitation and inactivation. Endogenous Ca(2+)-buffering proteins, such as parvalbumin (PV) and calbindin D-28k (CB), are highly expressed in Purkinje neurons and therefore may influence Ca(v)2.1 regulation by ...
