Effects of variations of the organic matter content and pH of soils on the availability and toxicity of zinc to the earthworm Eisenia fetida

چکیده
Nine toxicity tests were conducted using a procedure based on the OECD (1984) artificial soil earthworm toxicity test. For each test, Eisenia jet ida were exposed to zinc in a range of artificial soils with differing pH and/or organic matter (0 M) content. Earthworm survival and cocoon production, and the concentrations of zinc in two fractions (nitric acid extractable, water extractable) and the exposed earthworms were measured. The proportion of total zinc that was soluble was greater in soil with low pH and low OM content. Zinc burdens were greatest in worms maintained in the most contaminated soils. However, the slopes of the relationships between earthworm zinc concentrations and zinc concentrations in soils (total and soluble) were less than one indicating probable regulation of net assimilation of this essential element by Eisenia jet ida. Toxic effects of zinc on Eisenia fetida as measured by reductions in survival and cocoon production were related more closely to soluble than total metal concentrations in soil. In a previous series of tests, zinc toxicity for Eisenia fetida was found to be at least ten times greater in OECD artificial soil when compared to contaminated soils collected from a polluted field site (Spurgeon & Hopkin, 1995). It was concluded that this was due to the greater bioavailability of the metals in the OECD soil. The results of the present paper support this hypothesis.

Soil pH effects on the comparative toxicity of dissolved zinc, non-nano and nano ZnO to the earthworm Eisenia fetida.
To determine how soil properties influence nanoparticle (NP) fate, bioavailability and toxicity, this study compared the toxicity of nano zinc oxide (ZnO NPs), non-nano ZnO and ionic ZnCl2 to the earthworm Eisenia fetida in a natural soil at three pH levels. NP characterisation indicated that reaction with the soil media greatly controls ZnO properties. Three main conclusions were drawn. First ...

Background: Avian spermatozoa are characterized by high proportions of poly unsaturated fatty acid, associated with increased susceptibility to Reactive Oxygen Species and lipid peroxidation. Recent advances in poultry reproduction have focused on the potential of Reactive Oxygen Species as one of the prime mediators of infertility. Oxidative stress is the result of imbalance between the Reacti...

Earthworms are an important component of soil fauna because of their fundamental impact on soil physical, chemical and biological properties. To evaluate the effects of earthworms on some soil chemical properties as well as plant growth indicators, an experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design in greenhouse conditions. The first factor involved the presence or absence of earth...

Background and Aims: Nowadays, soil pollution with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) is one of the major environmental issues caused serious problems to human and other living organisms. One of the best and most reliable methods of bioremediation is the use of earthworms known as vermin-remediation. In this study, bioremediation of gasoline-contaminated soil using Eisenia Fetida, the mixture o...
متن کاملModeling zinc toxicity for terrestrial invertebrates.
Acute and chronic ecotoxicity tests with zinc were performed with the earthworm Eisenia fetida, the potworm Enchytraeus albidus, and the springtail Folsomia candida. To assess the influence of the soil type on zinc toxicity for these soil invertebrates, these tests were carried out in a standard artificial soil, a sandy and a loamy field soil. Based on the results of this experimental work and ...
