Sub-Critical Nuclear Tests: An Option for India?

چکیده

As India seeks to develop and maintain its nuclear weapons arsenal, it faces the critical question of how to ensure the reliability and safety of its nuclear weapons, especially as they age, in the absence of full-fledged nuclear explosive tests. Further, India must decide how to increase the yield (or decrease the yield, as needed) and reduce the weights of its existing weapons designs—that is, improve the technical quality and effectiveness of its weapons. India has three obvious choices regarding testing: do no more tests of any kind, break its self-imposed moratorium and conduct full explosive nuclear tests, or continue to develop and refine existing designs via sub-critical tests.2 This paper presents an analysis of these three options and concludes that sub-critical tests are the most likely route that India will adopt in the near term. Given this possibility, the paper details some recommendations that could help ensure greater transparency in the conduct of future Indian sub-critical tests. The use of sub-critical tests is preferable to full-scale nuclear explosive tests and could slow the further proliferation of nuclear weapons in South Asia, as new weapons development is more difficult without full explosive tests. The ideal situation, of course, is that India desist Gaurav Rajen is an independent consultant based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He studies nuclear nonproliferation issues and regional environmental cooperation in South Asia. His current research includes studies on the implications of tactical nuclear weapons development in South Asia, and nuclear confidence-building measures in South Asia that could prevent inadvertent nuclear war.1

An Experimental Study of the Steel Cylinder Quenching in Water-based Nanofluids

In this study, some parameters such as quenching and boiling curves of a stainless steel cylindrical rod 80 mm long and having a diameter of 15 mm were experimentally obtained in saturate pure water and two nanofluids (SiO2 and TiO2) with 0.01 wt%. The cylinder was vertically lowered into the pool of saturated water and its temporal center temperature was measured by a the...

Ten Years of Instability in a Nuclear South Asia

nuclear tests of May 1998 put to rest years of speculation as to whether the two countries, long suspected of developing covert weapons capabilities, would openly exercise their so-called nuclear option. The dust had hardly settled from the tests, however, when a arestorm of debate erupted over nuclear weapons’ regional security implications. Some observers argued that nuclearization would stab...

UWFDM-1313 Engineering Issues Facing Transmutation of Actinides in Z-Pinch Fusion Power Plant

The initiation of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership includes nuclear-based transmutation devices to recycle the spent fuel. Fusion can offer an alternative to the use of fast reactors for the transmutation of actinides. At a modest fusion power of 20 MW, a Z-Pinch driven sub-critical blanket can burn actinides and produce power. Several engineering issues have been examined: the effect of t...

Strongly stable multi-time stepping method with the option of controlling amplitude decay in responses

Recently, multi-time stepping methods have become very popular among scientist due to their high stability in problems with critical conditions. One important shortcoming of these methods backs to their high amount of uncontrolled amplitude decay. This study proposes a new multi-time stepping method in which the time step is split into two sub-steps. The first sub-step is solved using the well-...
