چکیده

Collocated observations of cloud-top height and cloud-profiling information from 14 CloudSat and MODIS cloud-top temperature are analyzed to determine where convective 15 cloud top occurs in relation to the cold point tropopause and the internal vertical structure 16 of these deep convective clouds. Three types of penetrating convection identified as cold17 low (CL), cold-high (CH), and warm-high (WH) are defined according to the cloud-top 18 temperature and height in comparison to the tropopause height and temperature: It is 19 suggested that CL, CH and WH types correspond to, respectively, the incipient, mature 20 and dissipating stage of the convective lifecycle. Multiple lines of evidence, including 21 CloudSat radar profiles tested against the undiluted ascent hypothesis and examination of 22 convective system size, all lend support to this interpretation. 23

Characterizing tropical overshooting deep convection from joint analysis of CloudSat and geostationary satellite observations

[1] Tropical overshooting deep convection (ODC) plays an important role in affecting the heat and constituent budgets of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. This study investigates the properties and behaviors of such intense deep convection using a combination of CloudSat observations and geostationary satellite data. Our study approaches the subject from two unique perspectives: fir...

Terminal versus transient cumulus congestus: A CloudSat perspective

[1] While cumulus congestus as an important mode of tropical convection has been established, many of the previous studies that rely on radar observations usually capture them as snapshots. A logical question to consider is: are the statistics gathered from snapshot observations of cumulus congestus really reflective of this mode of convection that ceases its growth at these intermediate levels...

Evaluation of tropical cloud and precipitation statistics of Community Atmosphere Model version 3 using CloudSat and CALIPSO data

[1] The combined CloudSat and CALIPSO satellite observations provide the first simultaneous measurements of cloud and precipitation vertical structure and are used to examine the representation of tropical clouds and precipitation in the Community Atmosphere Model version 3 (CAM3). A simulator package utilizing a model‐to‐satellite approach facilitates comparison of model simulations to observa...

Level of neutral buoyancy, deep convective outflow, and convective core: New perspectives based on 5 years of CloudSat data

This paper is the follow on to a previous publication by the authors, which investigated the relationship between the level of neutral buoyancy (LNB) determined from the ambient sounding and the actual outflow levels using mainly CloudSat observations. The goal of the current study is to provide a more complete characterization of LNB, deep convective outflow, and convective core, and the relat...

Tropical cloud and precipitation regimes as seen from near-simultaneous TRMM, CloudSat, and CALIPSO observations and comparison with ISCCP

Although Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and CloudSat/CALIPSO fly in different orbits, they frequently cross each other so that for the period between 2006 and 2010, a total of 15,986 intersect lines occurred within 20 min of each other from 30°S to 30°N, providing a rare opportunity to study tropical cloud and precipitation regimes and their internal vertical structure from near-sim...
