چکیده

ndemic Balkan nephropathy (EBN), a disease restricted to three Balkan countries (Bulgaria, Rumania, and Yugoslavia), is characterized by a progressive shrinking of the kidneys and, in some cases, tumors in the proximal regions of the urinary tract (1,2). A coronavirus was reported to be involved in the etiology of the disease, mostly on the basis of the isolation of a virus in cultures of kidney cells from a patient with EBN (1,3). In addition, EBN-associated virus is reported to share serologic homology with human coronaviruses OC43 and 229E, as well as the porcine transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus (formal name: Transmissible gastroenteritis virus [TGEV]), a virus that our laboratory has been studying for 16 years (4,5). The objective of this commentary is to clarify whether the EBN-associated virus is in fact related to members of the Coronaviridae family (6).

A historical overview of Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN) in relation to published hypotheses.

Balkan Endemic Nephropathy occurs with a high rate of prevalence in Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia. The first cases described in Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania date to the late 1950s and early 1960s. BEN has been characterized to date as a chronic, slowly progressive familial tubular interstitial renal disease of unknown aetiology. The disease is characterized by i...

Role of exposure analysis in solving the mystery of Balkan endemic nephropathy.

We evaluated the role of exposure analysis in assessing whether ochratoxin A or aristolochic acid are the agents responsible for causing Balkan endemic nephropathy. We constructed a framework for exposure analysis using the lessons learned from the study of endemic goiter within the context of an accepted general model. We used this framework to develop an exposure analysis model for Balkan end...

Balkan endemic nephropathy—current status and future perspectives

Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), originally described in 1956, is a unique familial, chronic renal disease encountered with a high-prevalence rate in Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The most prominent features of the disease are its endemic nature, long-incubation period, familial clustering of the disease and an unusually high incidence of associated upper uroth...

Weathered Coal Deposits and Balkan Endemic Nephropathy

The correlation between the geographic occurrence of Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) and low rank Pliocene lignites is striking. Comparison of mass spectra of methanol extracts from lignite samples collected in the vicinity of two endemic villages, with mass spectra of methanol extracts higher grade coals, shows the presence of many more potentially nephrotoxic compounds, and much higher total...
