Phylogeny and evolutionary history of queen polymorphic Myrmecina ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

چکیده
The phylogenetic relationships in the myrmicine ant genus Myrmecina were analyzed using 1,281 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene. Intermorphic queens observed in M. graminicola (Europe), M. nipponica (Japan), M. americana (North America; reported for the first time) and M. sp. A (Java) were reconstructed as an ancestral trait in this genus. Molecularclock-based age estimates suggest that queen polymorphism evolved in Myrmecina at the latest during the Miocene. In terms of biogeographical regions, the inferred chronological order of divergence is: (oriental, (nearctic, (western palearctic, eastern palearctic))). 619 ** Corresponding author. * These authors contributed equally to the work. validity of a recent morphologically based taxonomy of M. americana, M. graminicola and M. nipponica is examined, queen polymorphism is mapped onto the phylogeny to determine whether queen polymorphism is an ancestral or a derived trait in this genus, the phylogenetic tree is used to estimate the age of queen polymorphism in Myrmecina and the phylogenetic divergence of major lineages in terms of historical biogeography is discussed. New records of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Iran
The ant species list of Iran is far from complete. So far, only 110 species belonging to 26 genera have been recorded from Iran. For this study, we collected the majority of ant material in two periods of field work in spring and summer of 2007 and 2008. In total, we checked more than 35,000 specimens, and recorded 32 species and six genera new to Iran: Dolichoderus, Myrmecina, Proformica, Pyra...

متن کاملRediscovery of Crematogaster subgenus Colobocrema (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in Southeast Asia
The Crematogaster subgenus Colobocrema was established to include the single species C. cylindriceps Wheeler, based on a single queen from the Philippines. We discovered a species close to or the same as C. cylindriceps in Borneo and provide descriptions of the queen, worker and male. This species lives in live climber plants of secondary and primary rainforests. The phragmotic morphology chara...
متن کاملNatural history and phylogeny of the fungus-farming ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae: Attini)
Ants of the tribe Attini comprise a monophyletic group of approximately 230 described and many more undescribed species that obligately depend on the cultivation of fungus for food. In return, the ants nourish, protect, and disperse their fungal cultivars. Although all members of this tribe cultivate fungi, attine ants are surprisingly heterogeneous with regard to symbiont associations and agri...
متن کاملColony genetic structure and queen mating frequency in fire ants of the subgenus Solenopsis (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
Colony genetic structure was studied in natural populations of three fire ant taxa, Solenopsis richteri Forel, S. geminata (Fabr.), arid hybrid S. inuicta/richteri, using allozyme markers. All colonies studied exhibited arrays of femalc gcnotypes predicted under a model of monogyny (single functional queen) and monoandry (single insemination of queens). Males produced in the colonies appear to ...
