When counting cattle is not enough: multiple perspectives in agricultural and veterinary research

چکیده
A traditional approach in agricultural and veterinary research is focussing on the biological perspective where large cattle-databases are used to analyse the dairy herd. This approach has yielded valuable insights. However, recent research indicates that this knowledge-base can be further increased by examining agricultural and veterinary challenges from other perspectives. In this paper we suggest three perspectives that may supplement the biological perspective in agricultural and veterinary research; the economic-, the managerial-, and the social perspective. We review recent studies applying or combining these perspectives and discuss how multiple perspectives may improve our understanding and ability to handle cattle-health challenges.

متن کاملIsolation, Molecular Identification And Genomic Pattern of Mycobacterium Bovis Isolates Collected From Tuberculin-Positive Cattle in Infected Farms of Shiraz
Background: Mycobacterium bovis is the main cause of tuberculosis in cattle. At the global scale and also in Iran, the most frequent currently-in-use method in the detection of infected cattle is tuberculination. Objective: The present study was aimed to improve our genomic knowledge of Mycobacterium bovis population structure in cattle farms of Shiraz. Materials and Methods: Fifty pathologic...

The objective of the present study was to determine the grades of nonspecific bacterial infection of genitalia of repeat breeding cattle by a simple and rapid test under field condition. For this purpose, a total of 100 crossbred Jersey cows comprising of 80 repeat breeding animals presented for treatment and 20 normal cyclic (control group) animals presented for artificial insemination at thei...
متن کاملUtilization of Urea and Urease Treated Rice Straw by Indigenous Growing Cattle
The experiment was conducted to study the effect of treatment of rice straw with urea and a urease containing midden soil on the chemical composition of treated rice straw, feed intake of the animals, nutrients digestibility, body weight gain, feed conversion efficiency and overall economy of feeding for a period of 105 days. Twelve indigenous growing cattle (live weight 130.00±1.67 kg) were se...
متن کاملArteriographic Evaluation of Laminitis Digits in the Hind Limbs of Dairy Cattle
Objective: Laminitis is one of the main causes of lameness in dairy cattle. In this situation the corium blood circulation is disrupted and the production of healthy horny hoof wall is reduced. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the arteriographic pattern of the digital arterial branches in the laminitic digits and to compare them with the normal digits. Design: Original study. Animals...
