Synchronised changes of planktonic cyanobacterial and diatom assemblages in North German waters re- duce seasonality to two principal periods

چکیده

The seasonal dynamics of cyanobacterial and diatom assemblages in 11 water bodies along a mesoto hypertrophic gradient were compared. The cyanobacterial and diatom communities are characterised according to representative species of each algal class, selected by data reduction following principal component analyses and discriminant analysis. The cyanobacterial and diatom assemblages of the four seasons show different similarities in their species composition. In this respect the assemblages of the four seasons can be distinguished as only two different periods: winter/spring and summer/autumn. Species show a preference of growth either in the period of winter/spring (Limnothrix redekei, Nitzschia acicularis, Stephanodiscus neoastraea) or of summer/autumn (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, several species of Microcystis and Anabaena, Planktothrix agardhii, Aulacoseira granulata/italica/ambigua, Actinocyclus normanii). The significant compositional changes for both algal classes during the transition from spring to summer and from autumn to spring were discussed in relation to synchronised seasonal variations of TN:TP ratios.

Seasonal diatom variability and paleolimnological inferences – a case study

The seasonality of physical, chemical, and biological water variables is a major characteristic of temperate, dimictic lakes. Yet, few investigations have considered the potential information that is encoded in seasonal dynamics with respect to the paleolimnological record. We used a one-year sequence of diatoms obtained from sediment traps and water samples, as well as the sedimentary diatom r...

Quantitative and qualitative relationships between planktonic diatom communities and diatom assemblages in sedimenting material and surface sediments in Lake Baikal, Siberia

Endemic planktonic diatoms are a major component of Lake Baikal sediments during interglacial periods. To investigate how these diatom assemblages are altered during sediment formation, quantitative plankton monitoring (1995–1998) was integrated with sediment trapping over 2 yr (1996–1997) in Baikal’s southern basin (depth ;1,400 m). The traps consisted of both open (;6 monthly) and sequential ...

Comparison between Water Quality Index (WQI) and biological indices, based on planktonic diatom for water quality assessment in the Dong Nai River, Vietnam

The present study aims to have a comparative study of the results, from biological monitoring as well as conventional method, based on physico-chemical variables. Water quality index (WQI) and planktonic diatom metrics have been used to determine water quality and ecological conditions of the Dong Nai River (DNR) and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) to find out the main environmental var...

Diatom assemblages and Holocene sea level changes at the Tamatsu site in Kobe, western Japan1)

Diatom assemblages were analysed to clarify the changes in sedimentary environments caused by the Holocene sea level changes, and the results were cross-checked with information from the field observations of sedimentary facies. Diatoms were grouped into three ecological categories; marine, brackish and freshwater. Based on the ecological spectrum of the diatoms, the sediments were divided into...
