چکیده

We present procedures for selecting the best or near-best of a nite number of simulated systems when best is deened by maximum or minimum expected performance. The procedures are appropriate when it is possible to repeatedly obtain small, incre-mental samples from each simulated system. The goal of such a sequential procedure is to eliminate, at an early stage of experimentation, those simulated systems that are clearly inferior, and thereby reduce the overall computational eeort required to nd the best. The procedures we present accommodate unequal variances across systems and the use of common random numbers. However, they are based on the assumption of normally distributed data, so we analyze the impact of batching (to achieve approximate normality or independence) on the performance of the procedures. Comparisons with existing procedures are also provided.

A Fully Sequential Elimination Procedure for Indi↵erence-Zone Ranking and Selection with Tight Bounds on Probability of Correct Selection

We consider the indi↵erence-zone (IZ) formulation of the ranking and selection problem with independent normal samples. In this problem, we must use stochastic simulation to select the best among several noisy simulated systems, with a statistical guarantee on solution quality. Existing IZ procedures sample excessively in problems with many alternatives, in part because loose bounds on probabil...

A Fully Sequential Elimination Procedure for Indifference-Zone Ranking and Selection with Tight Bounds on Probability of Correct Selection

We consider the indifference-zone (IZ) formulation of the ranking and selection problem with independent normal samples and known sampling variance. Fully Sequential Indifference-Zone Selection Procedures with Variance-Dependent Sampling

Fully sequential indifference-zone selection procedures have been proposed in the simulation literature to select the system with the best mean performance from a group of simulated systems. However, the existing sequential indifference-zone procedures allocate an equal number of samples to the two systems in comparison even if their variances are drastically different. In this paper we propose...

A sequential procedure for neighborhood selection-of-the-best in optimization via simulation

We propose a fully sequential indifference-zone selection procedure that is specifically for use within an optimization-via-simulation algorithm when simulation is costly, and partial or complete information on solutions previously visited is maintained. Sequential Selection with Memory guarantees to select the best or near-best alternative with a user-specified probability when some solutions ...

Efficient Fully Sequential Indifference-Zone Procedures Using Properties of Multidimensional Brownian Motion Exiting a Sphere

We consider a ranking and selection (R&S) problem whose goal is to select a system with the largest or smallest expected performance measure among a number of simulated systems with a pre-specified probability of correct selection. Fully sequential procedures take one observation from each survived system and eliminate inferior systems when there is clear statistical evidence that they are infe...
