Probing the Mass Fraction of MACHOs in Extragalactic Halos
نویسنده
چکیده
Current microlensing searches calibrate the mass fraction of the Milky Way halo which is in the form of Massive Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs). We show that surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) can probe the same quantity in halos of distant galaxies. Microlensing of background quasars by MACHOs in intervening galaxies would distort the equivalent width distribution of the quasar emission lines by an amplitude that depends on the projected quasar-galaxy separation. For a statistical sample of ∼ 10 quasars as expected in the SDSS, this distortion is detectable at the ∼> 2σ level out to a quasar-galaxy impact parameter of several tens of kpc, as long as extragalactic halos are made of MACHOs. Detection of this signal would test whether the MACHO fraction inferred for the Milky-Way halo is typical of other galaxies. Extragalactic Inverse Compton Light from Dark Matter Annihilation and the Pamela Positron Excess
We calculate the extragalactic diffuse emission originating from the upscattering of cosmic microwave photons by energetic electrons and positrons produced in particle dark matter annihilation events at all redshifts and in all halos. We outline the observational constraints on this emission and we study its dependence on both the particle dark matter model (including the particle mass and its ...
متن کاملMACHOs AND MOLECULAR CLOUDS IN GALACTIC HALOS
Recent observations of microlensing events in the Large Magellanic Cloud by the MACHO and EROS collaborations suggest that an important fraction of the galactic halo is in the form of Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs) with mass ∼ 0.1M⊙. We outline a scenario in which dark clusters of MACHOs and molecular clouds form in the halo at galactocentric distances larger than ∼ 10 − 20...

One of the most important unresolved issues of modern physics is the presence of cold dark matter (CDM). Such dark matter appears to be essential in explaining the observed galactic rotation curves and the missing Cosmological dark matter. Recent attention has focused on galactic halos as an explanation of the galactic rotation curves, and on the possibility that galactic halos may consist of m...

We consider the possibility that the dark matter in the halos of galaxies may be in the form of clusters of Machos within which are embedded cold, dense gas clouds. Mi-crolensing experiments have found evidence that the Galactic halo contains up to half of its mass in the form of low-mass Machos. A number of observational and dynamical arguments point to the existence of hitherto unobserved col...
متن کاملPOINT-AGAPE Pixel Lensing Survey of M31 : Evidence for a MACHO contribution to Galactic Halos
The POINT-AGAPE collaboration is carrying out a search for gravitational microlensing toward M31 to reveal galactic dark matter in the form of MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects) in the halos of the Milky Way and M31. A high-threshold analysis of 3 years of data yields 6 bright, short–duration microlensing events, which are confronted to a simulation of the observations and the ...
