چکیده

This paper characterizes when a Delone setX in Rn is an ideal crystal in terms of restrictions on the number of its local patches of a given size or on the hetereogeneity of their distribution. For a Delone set X, let NX(T ) count the number of translation-inequivalent patches of radius T in X and let MX(T ) be the minimum radius such that every closed ball of radius MX(T ) contains the center of a patch of every one of these kinds. We show that for each of these functions there is a “gap in the spectrum” of possible growth rates between being bounded and having linear growth, and that having linear growth is equivalent to X being an ideal crystal. Explicitly, for NX(T ), if R is the covering radius of X then either NX(T ) is bounded or NX(T ) ≥ T/2R for all T > 0. The constant 1/2R in this bound is best possible in all dimensions. For MX(T ), either MX(T ) is bounded or MX(T ) ≥ T/3 for all T > 0. Examples show that the constant 1/3 in this bound cannot be replaced by any number exceeding 1/2. We also show that every aperiodic Delone set X has MX(T ) ≥ c(n)T for all T > 0, for a certain constant c(n) which depends on the dimension n of X and is > 1/3 when n > 1. Delone Sets with Finite Local Complexity: Linear Repetitivity Versus Positivity of Weights

We consider Delone sets with finite local complexity. We characterize validity of a subadditive ergodic theorem by uniform positivity of certain weights. The latter can be considered to be an averaged version of linear repetitivity. In fact, it is shown that linear repetitivity is equivalent to positivity of weights combined with a certain repulsion property of patterns and a balancedness of th...

Equicontinuous Delone Dynamical Systems

We characterize equicontinuous Delone dynamical systems as those coming from Delone sets with strongly almost periodic Dirac combs. Within the class of systems with finite local complexity the only equicontinuous systems are then shown to be the crystalline ones. On the other hand, within the class without finite local complexity, we exhibit examples of equicontinuous minimal Delone dynamical s...

Pure Point Diffraction Implies Zero Entropy for Delone Sets with Uniform Cluster Frequencies

Delone sets of finite local complexity in Euclidean space are investigated. We show that such a set has patch counting and topological entropy 0 if it has uniform cluster frequencies and is pure point diffractive. We also note that the patch counting entropy vanishes whenever the repetitivity function satisfies a certain growth restriction. 2000 AMS Subject Classification: 37A35, 37B40, 52C23

Geometric Models for Quasicrystals I. Delone Sets of Finite Type

This paper studies three classes of discrete sets X in R n which have a weak translational order imposed by increasingly strong restrictions on their sets of interpoint vectors X ? X. A nitely generated Delone set is one such that the abelian group X ? X] generated by X ? X is nitely generated, so that X ? X] is a lattice or a quasilattice. For such sets the abelian group X] is nitely generated...

Geometric Models for Quasicrystals II. Local Rules Under Isometries

The atomic structures of quasicrystalline materials exhibit long range order under translations. It is believed that such materials have atomic structures which approximately obey local rules restricting the location of nearby atoms. These local constraints are typically invariant under rotations, and it is of interest to establish conditions under which such local rules can nevertheless enforc...

Repetitive Delone Sets and Quasicrystals

This paper studies the problem of characterizing the simplest aperiodic discrete point sets, using invariants based on topological dynamics. A Delone set of finite type is a Delone set X such that X −X is locally finite. Such sets are characterized by their patch-counting function NX(T ) of radius T being finite for all T . We formulate conjectures relating slow growth of the patch-counting fun...
