Physico-chemical compositions of the red seedless watermelons (Citrullus Lanatus)

چکیده
Changes of physico-chemical properties such as size, weight, moisture content, total soluble solid (TSS), colour, pH, total acidity and sugar content of red seedless watermelon during storage at room temperature (± 28oC; 70-80% RH) were investigated. The average weight, diameter and length of red seedless watermelon were 5.94 kg, 22.0 cm and 21.8 cm respectively. The length to diameter ratio was 1.02. The statistical analysis indicated that total soluble solids of fruit decreased significantly (p<0.01), but no significant changes were found in pH and total acidity during ripening. Weight loss, moisture content and freezing point was found to be increased significantly (p<0.01) during ripening. Colour L* was found no significant changes but colour a* and b* increased significantly (p<0.1) throughout the ripening process. For sugar analysis, significant changes (p<0.1) in fructose and glucose were obtained, but no significant changes were observed in sucrose content during storage time. From the observation, the optimum eating quality of watermelon stored in room temperature (± 28oC; 70-80% RH) was within one week after harvest, although they can be stored up to 2 weeks. The data obtained is vital in order to apply in different field, purpose and application.

Origin and emergence of the sweet dessert watermelon, Citrullus lanatus.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Watermelons, Citrullus species (Cucurbitaceae), are native to Africa and have been cultivated since ancient times. The fruit flesh of wild watermelons is watery, but typically hard-textured, pale-coloured and bland or bitter. The familiar sweet dessert watermelons, C. lanatus, featuring non-bitter, tender, well-coloured flesh, have a narrow genetic base, suggesting that they...

متن کاملWatermelons as Food in the 22 Century
Watermelons Citrullus lanatus (Thumb.) Mansf. were reported to be growing in Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, Mediterranean Coasts, Europe and America in the late 1500s. Growth spread to Japan from South China and Southeast Asia. Fruits were basic food for people and animals in these countries, however the fruits bore little resemblance to current cultivars in size, shape, color and internal ...
متن کاملMedieval iconography of watermelons in Mediterranean Europe.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The watermelon, Citrullus lanatus (Cucurbitaceae), is an important fruit vegetable in the warmer regions of the world. Watermelons were illustrated in Mediterranean Antiquity, but not as frequently as some other cucurbits. Little is known concerning the watermelons of Mediterranean Europe during medieval times. With the objective of obtaining an improved understanding of wat...
متن کاملReaction of Ten Cultivars of Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) to a Puerto Rican population of Meloidogyne incognita.
Ten cultivars of watermelon were evaluated for their response to a Puerto Rican population of Meloidogyne incognita under greenhouse conditions in a 2-year study (1989 and 1990). Ten-day-old seedlings were planted in steam-sterilized soil in 15-cm-d plastic pots. The nematode inoculum consisted of 10,000 eggs and (or) second-stage juveniles (J2)/plant. The cultivars were Sugar Baby, Charleston ...
