چکیده

The interest in polysaccharides has increased considerably in recent years, as they are candidates for many commercial applications in different industrial sectors like food, petroleum, and pharmaceuticals. Because of their costly production processes, industrial microbial polysaccharides like xanthan, dextran, curdlan, gellan, and pullulan constitute only a minor fraction of the current polymer market. Therefore, much effort has been devoted to the development of cost-effective and environmentally friendly production processes by switching to cheaper fermentation substrates. In this chapter, various microbial polysaccharide production processes utilizing cheap biomass resources like syrups and molasses, olive mill wastewater, cheese whey, various vegetable and fruit pomace, pulp and kernels as well as carbon dioxide and lignocellulosic biomass like rice hull and bran, sawdust, and fibers are discussed with a special focus on the employed pretreatment methods.

Patterns of extracellular enzyme activities and microbial metabolism in an Arctic fjord of Svalbard and in the northern Gulf of Mexico: contrasts in carbon processing by pelagic microbial communities

The microbial community composition of polar and temperate ocean waters differs substantially, but the potential functional consequences of these differences are largely unexplored. We measured bacterial production, glucose metabolism, and the abilities of microbial communities to hydrolyze a range of polysaccharides in an Arctic fjord of Svalbard (Smeerenburg Fjord), and thus to initiate remin...

Regulation of microbial enzymatic degradation of organic matter in deep-sea sediments

The enzymatic response of a natural deep-sea microbial community to input of organic matter was investigated by substrate enrichment experiments. Sediments from the BIOTRANS area at 47"N 20°W in the NE Atlantic (4500 m depth) were supplied with particulate and dissolved organic matter from stenhzed net plankton and incubated under in situ pressure and temperature. Changes in the potential hydro...

The role of extracellular polymers on Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm biomass and metabolic activity.

Staphylococcus epidermidis is now well established as a major nosocomial pathogen, associated with indwelling medical devices. Its major virulence factor is related with the ability to adhere to indwelling medical devices and form biofilms. In this study, the biofilm matrix of four S. epidermidis clinical isolates was extracted and the polysaccharides and proteins content was quantified. The re...

A quantitative study on the formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm

Biofilms are bacterial cells in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substance. The formation of biofilm depends on the microenvironment. In this study, the effect of temperature on Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation was evaluated with respect to three parameters-the mass of biofilm formed, the production of extracellular polysaccharide and the adhesion force. The results indicate that bio...

A review of bioactive compounds of cyanobacteria and microalgae as cosmetically useful supplements

Today, the valuable metabolites of microalgae are widely used in the production of many cosmetic products, as the biomass of algae contains pigments, proteins, essential fatty acids, polysaccharides, vitamins and minerals, all of which are present in both natural foods and cosmetics are used. In fact, these secondary metabolites with anti-blemish and anti-microbial, anti-aging, sunscreen and sk...
