Corpus-based Method for Automatic Identiication of Support Verbs for Nominalizations
نویسنده
چکیده
Nominalization is a highly productive phenomena in most languages. The process of nominaliza-tion ejects a verb from its syntactic role into a nominal position. The original verb is often replaced by a semantically emptied support verb (e.g., make a proposal). The choice of a support verb for a given nomi-nalization is unpredictable, causing a problem for language learners as well as for natural language processing systems. We present here a method of discovering support verbs from an untagged corpus via low-level syntactic processing and comparison of arguments attached to verbal forms and potential nom-inalized forms. The result of the process is a list of potential support verbs for the nominalized form of a given predicate.

متن کاملConcordance-Based Data-Driven Learning Activities and Learning English Phrasal Verbs in EFL Classrooms
In spite of the highly beneficial applications of corpus linguistics in language pedagogy, it has not found its way into mainstream EFL. The major reasons seem to be the teachers’ lack of training and the unavailability of resources, especially computers in language classes. Phrasal verbs have been shown to be a problematic area of learning English as a foreign language due to their semantic op...
متن کاملHow textbooks (and learners) get it wrong: A corpus study of modal auxiliary verbs
Many elements contribute to the relative difficulty in acquiring specific aspects of English as a foreign language (Goldschneider & DeKeyser, 2001). Modal auxiliary verbs (e.g. could, might), are examples of a structure that is difficult for many learners. Not only are they particularly complex semantically, but especially in the Malaysian context ...
