Optical Effect of Surface Finish by Single Point Diamond Machining

چکیده
Although ultraprecision diamond turned optics can have surface roughness down to tens of nanometers or even lower, they may still contain defects due to machining process variations. Diamond turned surfaces have been carefully studied before [3-12]. The previous research however was mainly focused on the causes of the surface texture and one of the main goals of these studies was to improve the surface roughness (Ra). For many of the diamond turned surfaces used in optical applications, surface roughness Ra or surface power spectrum density (PSD) analysis alone is not adequate.

Ultra-Sharpening of Diamond Stylus by 500 eV O+/O2 + Ion Beam Machining without Facet and Ripple Formation
The price of single point diamond tools with a sharp tip is very high due to complex machining process and highly expensive machining equipments. Yet, the performance is not quite satisfactory. In this paper, we have presented a very simple and cost effective machining process for the sharpening and polishing of diamond stylus using low energy reactive ion beam machining (RIBM). In our method, ...
متن کاملApplication of precision diamond machining to the manufacture of micro-photonics components
The use of diamonds to generate precision patterns and precision surfaces on a micrometer or nanometer scale has a history that dates back centuries. Uses of diamond in semi-automated machinery can be traced to ruling machines, pantographs, and ornamental turning with “diamond turning” dating back about a century. Poor behavior in machining more common materials (e.g. ferrous alloys) has limite...
متن کاملSurface Generation in Ultra Precision Single Point Diamond Turning of Aluminum
INTRODUCTION Ultra precision single point diamond turning is a very promising tool based manufacturing technology because of its reliability, productivity and wide range of applications. However, with the reduction in cutting dimensions compared to traditional precision machining, the process physics differs substantially. This is largely because of size effects and increased surface finish exp...
متن کاملDuctile behavior of optical glass in single point diamond turning
Single point diamond turning tests were carried out on a B270 type glass. Submicrometer cutting conditions were applied in order to generate ductile response during single point machining. The profile generated by the rapid removal of the tool tip from the machined surface, analyzed by atomic force microscopy, showed that the brittle-to-ductile transition occurs at a few tenths of micrometers. ...
متن کاملUltraprecision Diamond Turning of Glass with Ultrasonic Vibration
Some brittle materials have found wide applications because of their excellent thermal, chemical, and wear resistance characteristics. Impeding the use of these brittle materials in precision engineering applications is the fact that currently it is very difficult for them to be machined in a way that ensures high precision in form and to a good surface finish. A non-traditional or unconvention...
