چکیده

Gasand particle-phase pollutants were measured separately for (a) light-duty (LD) vehicles and (b) medium-duty (MD) and heavy-duty (HD) diesel trucks. Measurements were made during summer 2006 at the Caldecott Tunnel in the San Francisco Bay area as part of a continuing campaign to track changes in vehicle emissions over time. When normalized to fuel consumption, NOx emission factors were found to be 3.070.2 and 4073 g kg 1 for LD vehicles and MD/HD diesel trucks, respectively. Corresponding particulate matter (PM2.5) emission factors were 0.0770.02 and 1.470.3 g kg . The ratio of particulate black carbon to organic mass (BC/OM) for LD vehicles was 0.7170.15. For diesel trucks, BC/OM was 271, indicating that PM2.5 was dominated by BC. Results from 2006 are compared to similar measurements made at the same site in 1997. For LD vehicles, NOx and PM2.5 emission factors decreased by 6773% and 36717%, respectively. Corresponding decreases for diesel trucks were 3079% for NOx and 48712% for PM2.5. The ratio of HD to LD emission factor for NOx increased from 671 to 1371 between 1997 and 2006, which indicates an increase in the relative importance of diesel trucks as a source of NOx emissions. The absorption, scattering, and extinction cross-section emission factors parameters relevant to climate change and atmospheric visibility, were an order of magnitude higher for diesel trucks than LD vehicles. Single-scattering albedo, measured at l 1⁄4 675 nm, was 0.3170.06 and 0.2070.05 for LD vehicle and diesel truck PM emissions, respectively. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

On-road measurement of "ne particle and nitrogen oxide emissions from light- and heavy-duty motor vehicles

An updated assessment of "ne particle emissions from lightand heavy-duty vehicles is needed due to recent changes to the composition of gasoline and diesel fuel, more stringent emission standards applying to new vehicles sold in the 1990s, and the adoption of a new ambient air quality standard for "ne particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) in the United States. This paper reports the measurement of emiss...

Quantifying on-road emissions from gasoline-powered motor vehicles: accounting for the presence of medium- and heavy-duty diesel trucks.

Vehicle emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), organic aerosol (OA), and black carbon (BC) were measured at the Caldecott tunnel in the San Francisco Bay Area. Measurements were made in bore 2 of the tunnel, where light-duty (LD) vehicles accounted for >99% of total traffic and heavy-duty trucks were not allowed. Prior emission studies conduct...

Environmental Effects of Vehicle Exhausts, Global and Local Effects – A Comparison between Gasoline and Diesel by LU JIE

Since 1970, vehicle’s exhaust pollutions have received increasing attention as a source of air pollution at both local (human health concerns) and global (global warming) scales. This study mainly discusses diesel and gasoline vehicles because, today, over 90% of vehicles on the road use gasoline and diesel fuels. The major concerns of gasoline exhaust contaminants are carbon monoxide (CO), hyd...

Will We Ever Stop Using Fossil Fuels?

F ossil fuels provide substantial economic benefits, but in recent decades, a series of concerns have arisen about their environmental costs. In the United States, for example, the Clean Air Act in 1970 and 1977 addressed concerns over the emissions of so-called conventional pollutions, notably airborne particulate matter, by imposing fuel economy standards on vehicles and regulations to reduce...
