چکیده

We es t imated lateral growth rates o f non ind igenous Spartina alterMflora pa tches in Willapa Bay, Washington, over th ree intervals between 1970 a n d 1990, to r econs t ruc t r ec ru i tmen t f r equency s ince & a/terMflorawas initially in troduced c. 1890. Black and white aerial pho tographs (1:24~000 scale) of fou r representat ive s i tes where S. alterMflora has invaded were analyzed. Individual pa tches were digit ized on a computer~ and d iameter and area w e r e c o m p u t e d for each patch for all years and sites s a m p l e d using CAD software. Lateral growth rates of individual S. alter~dflora patches increased l inear ly at 79.3 (--1.674 SE) CUl yr -L Back calculat ions of origin dates for individual patches based on mean lateral growth rates indicate that recru i tment of new patches has been episodic and increas ing in f r e q u e n c y s ince initial introduction. Environulenta l factors such as s ea sur face teulperature, s ea level , and precipitat ion may account for s o m e of this recru i tment variability. T h e s e data may be useful in exist ing and future m o d e l s of S. alterMflora expans ion in Pacific Northwest estuaries.

Nitrogen inputs promote the spread of an invasive marsh grass.

Excess nutrient loading and large-scale invasion by nonnatives are two of the most pervasive and damaging threats to the biotic and economic integrity of our estuaries. Individually, these are potent forces, but it is important to consider their interactive impacts as well. In this study we investigated the potential limitation of a nonnative intertidal grass, Spartina alterniflora, by nitrogen...

Benthic macrofaunal communities of three sites in San Francisco Bay invaded by hybrid Spartina, with comparison to uninvaded habitats

A hybrid cordgrass, formed from a cross between Spartina alterniflora (Atlantic cordgrass) and S. foliosa (Pacific cordgrass), has recently spread within the intertidal zone of south San Francisco Bay. Sediment properties and macroinfaunal community structure were compared in patches invaded by Spartina hybrid and adjacent uninvaded patches at 3 sites in San Francisco Bay (2 tidal flats and 1 S...

Invasive cordgrass modifies wetland trophic function.

Vascular plants strongly control belowground environments in most ecosystems. Invasion by vascular plants in coastal wetlands, and by cordgrasses (Spartina spp.) in particular, are increasing in incidence globally, with dramatic ecosystem-level consequences. We examined the trophic consequences of invasion by a Spartina hybrid (S. alterniflora x S. foliosa) in San Francisco Bay (USA) by documen...

Physical Stress, Not Biotic Interactions, Preclude an Invasive Grass from Establishing in Forb-Dominated Salt Marshes

BACKGROUND Biological invasions have become the focus of considerable concern and ecological research, yet the relative importance of abiotic and biotic factors in controlling the invasibility of habitats to exotic species is not well understood. Spartina species are highly invasive plants in coastal wetlands; however, studies on the factors that control the success or failure of Spartina invas...

Changes in Community Structure and Ecosystem Function Following Spartina alterniflora Invasion of Pacific Estuaries

One of the most pervasive human impacts to salt marshes around the world is the introduction of nonnative species. Plant introductions to salt marsh systems have resulted in significant changes ranging from species replacement to broad-scale alteration of ecosystem properties. In this chapter, we examine the changes produced by the invasive Atlantic smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora in two...
