On the General Argument Against Internalism Forthcoming in Synthese

چکیده
I respond to John Greco’s argument that all forms of internalism in epistemology are either false or uninteresting. The paper divides into two sections. First, I explain precisely what internalists and externalists in epistemology disagree over. This puts us in a position to assess whether Greco’s argument succeeds. Second, I present Greco’s argument and offer two objections. 1. Internalism and Externalism More than one debate goes by the label ‘internalism/externalism’ in contemporary epistemology. All share one thing in common, namely, they concern the nature and grounds of evaluative epistemic properties, especially justification. The controversy ultimately turns on the correct answer to two questions. متن کاملSensory Awareness as Irreducible
This paper is a companion to “Sensory Awareness is not a Wide Physical Relation: An Empirical Argument against Externalist Intentionalism” (forthcoming, with a reply by Michael Tye, in Nous). I generalize the argument of that previous paper. I attempt to show that, given the mild form of Internalism argued for in the previous paper, it is not only the case that the awareness relation cannot be ...

Elizabeth Barnes Forthcoming in Synthese Abstract: In this paper I argue that Gareth Evans’ famous proof of the impossibility of metaphysically indeterminate identity fails on a counterpart-theoretic interpretation of the determinacy operators. I attempt to motivate a counterpart-theoretic reading of the determinacy operators and then show that, understood counterpart-theoretically, Evans’ argu...

According to the Argument from Disagreement (AD) widespread and persistent disagreement on ethical issues indicates that our moral opinions are not influenced by moral facts, either because there are no such facts or because there are such facts but they fail to influence ourmoral opinions. In an innovative paper, Gustafsson and Peterson (Synthese, published online 16October, 2010) study the ar...
متن کاملMethodological naturalism and epistemic internalism
Epistemic naturalism holds that the results or methodologies from the cognitive sciences are relevant to epistemology, and some have maintained that scientific methods are more compatible with externalist theories of justification than with internalist theories. But practically all discussions about naturalized epistemology are framed exclusively in terms of cognitive psychology, which is only ...
