Fractures of the Scapula: Diagnosis, Indications, and Operative Technique
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Scapular fractures account for 3% to 5% of all fractures of the shoulder girdle and compose 0.4% to 1% of all fractures. The annual incidence of these injuries is estimated at 10 per 100,000 persons. The scapula plays an integral role in the association between the upper extremity and the axial skeleton. Scapular fractures have the potential to cause significant pain and to alter normal function of the shoulder girdle as a result of malunion, nonunion, rotator cuff dysfunction, scapulothoracic dyskinesis, or impingement.

Fractures of the Scapula
The scapula plays a critical role in the association between the upper extremity and the axial skeleton. Fractures of the scapula account for 0.4% to 1% of all fractures and have an annual incidence of approximately 10 per 100,000 inhabitants. Scapular fractures typically result from a high-energy blunt-force mechanism and are often associated with other traumatic injuries. The present review f...
متن کاملDelayed operative management of fractures of the scapula.
Between 1998 and 2007, 22 patients with fractures of the scapula had operative treatment more than three weeks after injury. The indications for operation included displaced intra-articular fractures, medialisation of the glenohumeral joint, angular deformity, or displaced double lesions of the superior shoulder suspensory complex. Radiological and functional outcomes were obtained for 16 of 22...
متن کاملArthroscopic Lateral Border Resection in Medialized Scapula Neck Fractures
Scapula neck fractures are rare injuries, leaving several treatment options. Standardized markers for operative treatment are a decreased glenopolar angle ≤22°, lateral border offset (LBO) of the glenoid ≥20 mm, angular deformity ≥45°, or LBO ≥15 mm plus angular deformity ≥35°. If operative treatment is not performed before union, the fracture heals malaligned with possible mechanical complicat...
متن کاملSurgery for scapula process fractures
BACKGROUND Generally, scapula process fractures (coracoid and acromion) have been treated nonoperatively with favorable outcome, with the exception of widely displaced fractures. Very little has been published, however, regarding the operative management of such fractures and the literature that is available involves very few patients. Our hypothesis was that operative treatment of displaced ac...
متن کاملIsolated Fractures of the Body of Scapula
UNLABELLED Fractures of the scapula body are relatively rare constituting 1% of all fractures and 5% of all fractures around shoulder (1). They are usually caused due to high energy vehicular trauma or fall of heavy object over scapula (1,2,3). In most cases of scapula fractures, early functional treatment gives good or excellent results (1,2). Operative treatment may however be indicated in hi...
