Takeshi Kataoka and T. R. Akylas Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology [email protected] Abstract The stability of isolated and interacting internal gravity wave beams to three-dimensional perturbations is studied, based on the beam–mean-flow interaction equations derived in Kataoka and Akylas (2015). These two-dimensional states are found to be unstable as a result of modulational instability, a purely inviscid mechanism, as well as due to a streaming effect brought about by viscous attenuation along the beam propagation direction.

Parametric subharmonic instability of internal gravity wave beams
Internal gravity wave beams are time-harmonic plane waves with general spatial profile that arise in continuously stratified fluids owing to the anisotropy of this wave motion. In the last decade, these wave disturbances have been at the forefront of research, both from a fundamental perspective and in connection with various geophysical flow processes. Oceanic internal wave beams, in particula...
متن کاملInternal Gravity Waves and Hyperbolic Boundary-value Problems†
Talk Abstract Three-dimensional time-harmonic internal gravity waves are generated by oscillating a bounded object in an unbounded stratified fluid. Energy is found in conical wave beams. The problem is to calculate the wave fields for an object of arbitrary shape. It can be formulated as a hyperbolic boundary-value problem. The following aspects are discussed: reduction to boundary integral eq...

متن کاملGravity wave breaking in two and three dimensions 1. Model description and comparison of twodimensional evolutions
A nonlinear, compressible, spectral collocation code is employed to examine gravity wave breaking in two and three spatial dimensions. Twodimensional results exhibit a structure consistent with previous efforts and suggest wave instability occurs via convective rolls aligned normal to the gravity wave motion (uniform in the spanwise direction). Three-dimensionM results demonstrate, in contrast,...
