Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders

چکیده
INTRODUCTION T he eosinophilic gastroenteropathies are an interesting, yet somewhat poorly defined set of disorders that by definition include the infiltration of at least one layer of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract with eosinophils. First reported over 50 years ago, the clinical spectrum of these disorders was defined solely by various case reports. As these reports became more frequent, various aspects of the disease became better described and stratified. Additional insight into the role of the eosinophil in health and disease has allowed further description of these disorders with respect to the underlying defect that drives the inflammatory response in those afflicted (Table 1). Perhaps, most important to the definition has been the understanding of the heterogeneity of the sites affected within the gastrointestinal tract. Within the broad classification of these disorders lie at least three clinical entities that are defined in large part by the presence of abnormal numbers of eosinophils in various GI sites: eosinophilic proctocolitis (EP), eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EG), and eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) (Table 2).

Serum Interleukin-17 Evaluation in Patients With Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease
Background: Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders or diseases (EGIDs) may result from an abnormal immune-mediated response to food antigens. Activated eosinophils release various mediators with inflammatory properties which may result in tissue and subsequently organ damage. The cytokine milieu of these patients has revealed increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, inc...

Background: Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID) are a heterogeneous group of GI disorders, associated with an increase of the eosinophils in the gastrointestinal mucosal tissue. Regulatory T cells (Tregs), as a subset of T cells with proven prominent role in immunopathology and protection against allergic diseases, appear to play a role in EGID pathogenesis. In the present study, ser...

Allergy and eosinophilia in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are not equivalent. GI eosinophilia is associated with infections (parasites), nutritional deficiencies, inflammatory processes, neoplasias, and systemic disorders. However, in addition to eosinophilia, other histologic changes usually accompany the increased number of eosinophils in most of these conditions. In contrast, there is a gr...
متن کاملEosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorder in Coeliac Disease: A Case Report and Review
Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorder is a rare disorder characterised by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract. There are various gastrointestinal manifestations with eosinophilic ascites being the most unusual and rare presentation. Diagnosis requires high index of suspicion and exclusion of various disorders associated with peripheral eosinophilia. There are no previous ca...
متن کاملSignificance of Mouse Models in Dissecting the Mechanism of Human Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases (EGID).
Evidence suggests that eosinophils play a significant role in promoting several gastrointestinal diseases, and animal models are the significant tools to understand the pathogenesis of eosinophil-associatd inflammatory disorders. The focus of this review is on the significance of mouse models that mimic the characteristics of human eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases. Eosinophils are the imp...
