Multiresolution discontinuity-preserving surface reconstruction

چکیده
This paper proposes a single multiresolution framework for both surface "tting and discontinuities identi"cation in the surface reconstruction problem. In particular, the Mallat}Zhong wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) representation is employed for representing the surface which allows the discontinuity detection and surface "tting to be carried out simultaneously in a cooperative manner under the same multiresolution framework. On the one hand, the multiresolution feature analysis inherent in the WTMM representation helps characterize the strength of the di!erent signi"cant features, and thus by updating the WTMM surface in a number of energy-minimization processes, the discontinuities can be detected and tracked across various resolution levels. On the other hand, the detected discontinuities in turn control spatially the suitable degree of smoothness at various image positions when the surface is "tted to the input data in the energy-minimizing processes. In this way, the discontinuity detection and the surface "tting processes mutually assist each other. Experimental results show that a piecewise smooth surface can be reconstructed without discontinuity being over-smoothed. 2001 Pattern Recognition Society. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. GPU-Based Multiresolution Deformation using Approximate Normal Field Reconstruction
Multiresolution shape editing performs global deformations while preserving fine surface details by modifying a smooth base surface and reconstructing the modified detailed surface as a normal displacement from it. Since two non-trivial operators (deformation and reconstruction) are involved, the computational complexity can become too high for real-time deformations of complex models. We prese...

متن کاملFast Generation of multiresolution surfaces from Contours
Surface reconstruction from contours is an important problem especially in medical applications. Other uses include reconstruction from topographic data, or isosurface generation in general. The drawback of existing reconstruction algorithms from contours is, that they are relatively complicated and often have numerical problems. Furthermore, algorithms to generate multiresolution surface model...
متن کاملMultiresolution Inverse Wavelet Reconstruction from a Fourier Partial Sum
The Gibbs phenomenon refers to the lack of uniform convergence which occurs in many orthogonal basis approximations to piecewise smooth functions. This lack of uniform convergence manifests itself in spurious oscillations near the points of discontinuity and a low order of convergence away from the dis-continuities. In previous work [11,12] we described a numerical procedure for overcoming the ...
