Hybrid modeling of time-dependent rarefied gas expansion

چکیده
The time evolution of the flow parameters in a system where gas is expanded from a high pressure chamber through a tube toward a low pressure chamber is investigated. During the process, the pressure in the two chambers is changing in the opposite direction, while the flow rate is reduced until the system reaches its equilibrium state. Rarefied conditions may be present. Based on the observation that the characteristic time in the chambers is several orders of magnitude larger than that in the tube, the evolution of the flow is modeled in a hybrid manner. At each time step, based on kinetic theory, a steady-state flow configuration is solved to estimate the amount of gas passing through the tube (micromodel) and then the pressure of the two vessels is updated by applying the mass conservation principle and the equation of state (macromodel). The pressure and the flow rate variation with respect to time are provided for several time-dependent configurations and the dependency of the results on the initial Knudsen number and pressure ratio as well as on the length of the tube is analyzed. The proposed methodology, which is applicable when the volume of the chambers is significantly larger than the volume of the tube, is valid in the whole range of the Knudsen number and computationally very efficient. An Implicit Monte Carlo Methodfor Rarefied Gas DynamicsI. The Space Homogeneous Case
For the space homogeneous Boltzmann equation, we formulate a hybrid Monte Carlo method that is robust in the fluid dynamic limit. This method is based on an analytic representation of the solution over a single time step and involves implicit time differencing derived from a suitable power series expansion of the solution (a generalized Wild expansion). A class of implicit, yet explicitly imple...
متن کاملRarefied gas dynamics and its applications to vacuum technology
Basic concepts of rarefied gas dynamics are given in a concise form. Some problems of rarefied gas flows are considered, namely, calculations of velocity slip and temperature jump coefficients, gas flow through a tube due to pressure and temperature gradients, and gas flow through a thin orifice. Results on the two last problems are given over the whole range of gas rarefaction. A methodology f...

A pilot model of the hypersonic rarefied wind-tunnel (HRWT) has been developed and its flow characteristics have been measured. The HRWT consists of a gas heater which produces an increase in working gas temperature, an expansion nozzle with a large expansion ratio, a vacuum chamber as the test section, and an evacuation system with high exhaust velocity to allow a continuous operation at low a...
متن کاملA Multiscale Particle Approach for Continuum/Rarefied Flow Simulation
A hybrid particle scheme is presented for the simulation of compressible gas flows involving both continuum regions and rarefied regions with strong translational nonequilibrium. The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is applied in rarefied regions, while remaining portions of the flowfield are simulated using a DSMC-based low diffusion particle method for inviscid flow simulation. The...
