چکیده

THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN FATTY LIVER and sudden death has long been suspected, particularly in forensic pathology, but its pathogenic mechanisms remain elusive. This report describes several cases of fatty liverassociated sudden death in connection with extensive right ventricular fatty replacement. On the basis of the findings described in this study, it is hypothesized that extensive fatty replacement of the right ventricle is the missing link between fatty liver and sudden death, particularly in alcoholics and possibly also in obese and diabetic patients. In support of this proposed link, relevant literature on arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, alcoholic and nonalcoholic steatosis/steatohepatitis, and fatty liver-associated sudden death is also discussed. It is suggested that right ventricular fatty replacement associated with fatty liver may represent a unique subset of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy caused by chronic lipid metabolic disturbances. Transitioning to a Data Driven Mental Health Practice: Collaborative Expert Sessions for Knowledge and Hypothesis Finding

The surge in the amount of available data in health care enables a novel, exploratory research approach that revolves around finding new knowledge and unexpected hypotheses from data instead of carrying out well-defined data analysis tasks. We propose a specification of the Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM), suitable for conducting expert sessions that focus on finding ...

Reconsideration of animal models of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders with evolutionary perspective.

Studies utilizing animal models for understanding biological mechanisms of such psychiatric disorders as schizophrenia have been now flourishing. Animal models are a essential part of translational research, and without them, it is not possible to develop therapeutic strategies to treat psychiatric disorders. Accordingly, importance of animal models has been increasingly emphasized. However, on...

The Genetics Counselor

The Genetics Counselor is a computer program, written in LISP, designed to handle problems of medical genetics counseling. It is an attempt to apply the methods of artificial intelligence research to medical diagnostic problems. The program attempts to map the data space of a family-tree structure into the hypothesis space of classical Mendelian genetics by use of a heuristic search. The input ...

Multiple sclerosis: prevention of serious illness--vision of a desired future for newly ascertained patients.

The increased prevalence of MS worldwide and the resultant high frequency of serious illness among young adults urges that the developed methods of prophylaxis are fully tested. Reference is made to the hypothesis of a circulating toxin playing a role in disease development. Insights from basic research now in progress may expand or amend the scenario. This discussion pertains to biological rea...

Etiology of Gastroschisis

If scientific progress depends upon research experiments, experiments themselves depend upon hypotheses. In material science such as Theoretical Physics, even Nobel Prizes have been awarded for hypothetical works [1]. Unfortunately, the healing science is reeling in the rungs of ‘Evidence-Based Medicine’. Although a specialized journal ‘Medical Hypotheses’ tries to bridge this gap, medical scie...
