چکیده

In the present work, a detailed theoretical analysis of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based fiber optic sensor with an alternating dielectric multilayer system is carried out. The dielectric system consists of silica and titanium oxide layers. The effect of critical design parameters on the sensor’s sensitivity and detection accuracy is studied. The results are explained in terms of appropriate physical phenomena, wherever required. Based on the analysis, a new design of a fiber optic SPR sensor for gas detection is proposed. The analysis of such a gas sensor is carried out for four metals separately for a clear understanding. The proposed gas sensor is able to provide reasonably high values of all the performance parameters simultaneously, as required for an efficient detection of gaseous media. 1 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Fiber - Optic Sensing of Linear Thermal Expansion (RESEARCH NOTES)

The use of a LED fiber-optic sensor to measure displacement and linear thermal expansion is described. It has a sensitivity of about 0.6 mV/mm, a resolution of 1.25 mm, and a dynamic rang of 400 mm for displacement measurements. For thermal expansion, it shows a sensitivity of about 3.5 mV/C, and the experimental linear expansion values are in agreement with those calculated. The reported senso...

Temperature Dependent Signal-to-noise Ratio and Sensitivity of a Surface Plasmon Resonance Based Fiber Optic Sensor

In the present paper, a theoretical analysis for predicting the effect of temperature on the performance of a fiber optic SPR sensor has been carried out. The sensor configuration is a three layer Krestchmann configuration consisting of fiber core, thin metallic layer, and bulk sensing layer. The optical fiber considered is a multimoded fiber. The effect of temperature is included in terms of t...

Fiber optic Surface Plasmon Resonance sensor based on wavelength modulation for hydrogen sensing.

A new design of a fiber optic Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor using Palladium as a sensitive layer for hydrogen detection is presented. In this approach, a transducer layer is deposited on the outside of a multimode fiber, after removing the optical cladding. The transducer layer is a multilayer stack made of a Silver, a Silica and a Palladium layer. The spectral modulation of the light ...

Fabrication and Characterization of a SPR Based Fiber Optic Sensor for the Detection of Chlorine Gas Using Silver and Zinc Oxide

A fiber optic chlorine gas sensor working on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique fabricated using coatings of silver and zinc oxide films over unclad core of the optical fiber is reported. The sensor probe is characterized using wavelength interrogation and recording SPR spectra for different concentrations of chlorine gas around the probe. A red shift is observed in the resonance wavelen...

Fabrication and Characterization of the Fiber Optical Taper for a Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor

For a fiber optical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor a short part of its cladding should be removed to coat a thin layer of a metal. Usually this is problematic when an optical fiber with small core diameter is used. In this paper, a new method using µliter droplet of the HF acid for short fiber optical taper fabrication is reported. Using this method in a multi-mode optical fiber w...
