On the Descriptional Complexity of Simple RL-Automata

چکیده
Analysis by reduction is a method used in linguistics for checking the correctness of sentences of natural languages. This method is modelled by restarting automata. Here we study a new type of restarting automaton, the so-called t-sRLautomaton, which is an RL-automaton that is rather restricted in that it has a window of size 1 only, and that it works under a minimal acceptance condition. On the other hand, it is allowed to perform up to t rewrite (that is, delete) steps per cycle. We focus on the descriptional complexity of these automata, establishing two complexity measures that are both based on the description of t-sRL-automata in terms of socalled meta-instructions. We present some hierarchy results as well as a non-recursive trade-off between deterministic 2-sRL-automata and finite-state acceptors.

Descriptional Complexity of Machines with Limited Resources
Over the last 30 years or so many results have appeared on the descriptional complexity of machines with limited resources. Since these results have appeared in a variety of different contexts, our goal here is to provide a survey of these results. Particular emphasis is put on limiting resources (e.g., nondeterminism, ambiguity, lookahead, etc.) for various types of finite state machines, push...
متن کاملDescriptional Complexity of NFAs of Different Ambiguity
In this paper, we study the tradeoffs in descriptional complexity of NFA (nondeterministic finite automata) of various amounts of ambiguity. We say that two classes of NFA are separated if one class can be exponentially more succinct in descriptional sizes than the other. New results are given for separating DFA (deterministic finite automata) from UFA (unambiguous finite automata), UFA from MD...
متن کاملOn the Descriptional Complexity of Finite Automata With Modified Acceptance Conditions
We consider deterministic and nondeterministic finite automata with acceptance conditions that rely on the whole history of a computation on a given word and not only on the last state of the computation under consideration. Formally, these conditions can be seen as the natural analogies of the Büchi and Muller acceptance for finite automata on infinite words. We study the computational power o...
متن کاملThe Formal Language Theory Column
Formal languages can be described by several means. A basic question is how succinctly can a descriptional system represent a formal language in comparison with other descriptional systems? What is the maximal size trade-off when changing from one system to another, and can it be achieved? Here, we select some recent trends in the descriptional complexity of formal languages and discuss the pro...
متن کاملMore on Deterministic and Nondeterministic Finite Cover Automata - Extended Abstract
Finite languages are an important sub-regular language family, which were intensively studied during the last two decades in particular from a descriptional complexity perspective. An important contribution to the theory of finite languages are the deterministic and the recently introduced nondeterministic finite cover automata (DFCAs and NFCAs, respectively) as an alternative representation of...
