چکیده
In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out on San Carlos olivine (Mg0.9Fe0.1)2SiO4 up to 8 GPa and 1073 K. Data analysis using the high-temperature Birch–Murnaghan (HTBM) equation of state (EoS) yields the temperature derivative of the bulk modulus (∂KT/∂T)P =−0.019± 0.002 GPa K−1. The thermal pressure (TH) approach gives αKT = 4.08± 0.10× 10−3 GPa K−1, from which (∂KT/∂T)P =−0.019± 0.001 GPa K−1 is derived. Fitting the present data to the Mie–Grüneisen–Debye (MGD) formalism, the Grüneisen parameter at ambient conditions γ0 is constrained to be 1.14± 0.02 with fixed volume dependence q= 1. Combining the present data with previous results on iron-bearing olivine and fitting to MGD EoS, we obtain γ0 = 1.11± 0.01 and q= 0.54± 0.36. In this study the thermoelastic parameters obtained from various approaches are in good agreement with one another and previous results. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. e and h

Brillouin scattering and X-ray diffraction of San Carlos olivine: direct pressure determination to 32 GPa
The single-crystal elastic moduli of San Carlos olivine, (Mg0.9Fe0.1)2SiO4, were determined at seven pressures between 2.5 and 32.5 GPa by Brillouin spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell. The unit cell volume was also determined at each pressure (and ambient pressure) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The shear elastic moduli exhibit non-linear pressure dependencies. In particular, a non-line...

Melt-free and basaltic (complex alumino-silicate) melt-bearing specimens of fine-grained polycrystalline olivine (Mg0.9Fe0.1)2SiO4, tested at igh temperature and low frequency in torsional forced oscillation and microcreep, display markedly different behavior. For the melt-bearing aterials, superimposed upon the high-temperature background is a dissipation peak whose height varies systematicall...
متن کاملThermal elasticity of (Fex,Mg1 x)2SiO4 olivine and wadsleyite
[1] We present first-principles results for elastic moduli (bulk, K, and shear, G) and acoustic velocities (compressional, VP, shear, VS, and bulk VΦ) of olivine (a) and wadsleyite (b) (Fex,Mg1 x)2SiO4, at high pressure (P) and temperature (T) with varying iron content (0≤ x≤ 0.125). Pressure and temperature derivatives of these properties are analyzed. We show that adding 12.5% of Fe in forste...
متن کاملSeismic Discontinuity
The 41 0-kilometer seismic discontinuity is generally considered to be caused by a phase transformation of the main constituent of the upper mantle, olivine, ot-(Mg,Fe)2SiO4, to P-(Mg,Fe)2SiO4. Recent data show that H20 dissolves in olivine and other nominally anhydrous mantle minerals and that the partitioning of H20 between olivine and P-(Mg,Fe)2Si04 is about 1:10. Such behavior strongly affe...
متن کاملArsenic Sorption on Mechanically Activated Magnetite and Olivine
Arsenic sorption on mechanically activated minerals such as magnetite Fe3O4 (Kiruna, Sweden) and olivine (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 (Ǻheim, Norway) has been studied and compared in this work. Experiments were carried out with non-activated and mechanically activated samples. The activation of both minerals was performed in a planetary mill at different milling conditions. The specific surface area and conseq...
