What Simulations Can Do That Experiments Cannot, And Vice Versa

چکیده
Extended Abstract In this talk I shall explore what kind of knowledge can be obtained from computer simulations and the sense in which that knowledge is different from what can be gained from traditional experiments on the one hand and from traditional theoretical work on the other. Some recent literature has suggested that the more similar the experimental subjects are to the target systems, the greater the security of the inferences involved. Although that is true in an important sense, it is not the most relevant aspect when we are interested in the role that concrete implementations play in simulations. I shall illustrate my arguments with examples from artificial societies and artificial economics, two areas in which agent based models have significant similarities to artificial life models.

Securing Cloud - The Quantum Way
Before we move forward a basic question arises that, what are quantum properties? To answer this question, we'll look at the basis of quantum mechanics – The Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. The uncertainty principle states that the more precisely the position is determined, the less precisely the momentum is known in this instant, and vice versa. For instance, if you measure the position of...

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to explore some important views and theories of information and knowledge in the area of library and information science (LIS) and then to propose a new model of information and knowledge. Method: This research has been conducted by using a comparative content analysis of the existing materials on conceptualizations and definitions of information and knowledge...
متن کاملDesire, Reward, Feeling: Commentary on Three Faces of Desire
The three faces of desire are, in a nutshell, that desires are motivating, that satisfying desires is usually pleasurable, and that desires determine what will count as rewards and punishments. Schroeder's view of how these knit together goes like this. Pleasure and displeasure are a result of desires so cannot be what desire consists in. We can desire without being motivated and vice-versa; th...
متن کاملGranger Causality and Equilibrium Business Cycle Theory
I investigate whether existing equilibrium business cycle models driven by demand shocks (in particular, government spending shocks) can rationalize the observed causal relationship when the following information structure is embedded: (i) Employment and output cannot respond to demand shocks immediately; they can do so only with a lag behind consumption. And (ii) investment cannot respond to d...
متن کاملLate-breaking News
It has been quite a while since I’ve written one of these columns. Our production team (whose names may be found on the back of the title page) has grown to include some new members. Most notable of these has been Karl Berry, who has provided technical input, editorial input, as well as having gone out and “beat the bushes” to obtain new and interesting articles. The major problem over the past...
