Initial Conditions of Planet Formation: Lifetimes of Primordial Disks

چکیده

The statistical properties of circumstellar disks around young stars are important for constraining theoretical models for the formation and early evolution of planetary systems. In this brief review, I survey the literature related to ground-based and Spitzer-based infrared (IR) studies of young stellar clusters, with particular emphasis on tracing the evolution of primordial (“protoplanetary”) disks through spectroscopic and photometric diagnostics. The available data demonstrate that the fraction of young stars with optically thick primordial disks and/or those which show spectroscopic evidence for accretion appears to approximately follow an exponential decay with characteristic time ∼2.5 Myr (half-life ≃ 1.7 Myr). Large IR surveys of ∼2–5 Myr-old stellar samples show that there is real cluster-by-cluster scatter in the observed disk fractions as a function of age. Recent Spitzer surveys have found convincing evidence that disk evolution varies by stellar mass and environment (binarity, proximity to massive stars, and cluster density). Perhaps most significantly for understanding the planeticity of stars, the disk fraction decay timescale appears to vary by stellar mass, ranging from ∼1 Myr for >1.3 M⊙ stars to ∼3 Myr for <0.08 M⊙ brown dwarfs. The exponential decay function may provide a useful empirical formalism for estimating very rough ages for YSO populations and for modeling the effects of disk-locking on the angular momentum of young stars.

Giant Planet Migration, Disk Evolution, and the Origin of Transitional Disks

We present models of giant planet migration in evolving protoplanetary disks. Our disks evolve subject to viscous transport of angular momentum and photoevaporation, while planets undergo Type II migration. We use a Monte Carlo approach, running large numbers of models with a range in initial conditions. We find that relatively simple models can reproduce both the observed radial distribution o...

Diffusive Migration of Low-Mass Proto-planets in Turbulent Disks

Torque fluctuations due to magnetorotational turbulence in proto-planetary disks may greatly influence the migration patterns and survival probabilities of nascent planets. Provided that the turbulence is a stationary stochastic process with finite amplitude and correlation time, the resulting diffusive migration can be described with a FokkerPlanck equation, which we reduce to an advection-dif...

The Last Gasp of Gas Giant Planet Formation : A Spitzer Study of the 5 Myr - old Cluster NGC 2362

Expanding upon the IRAC survey from Dahm and Hillenbrand (2007), we describe Spitzer IRAC and MIPS observations of the populous, 5 Myr-old open cluster NGC 2362. We analyze the mid-IR colors of cluster members and compared their spectral energy distributions to star+circumstellar disk models to constrain the disk morphologies and evolutionary states. Early/intermediate-type confirmed/candidate ...

The Evolutionary State of Anemic Circumstellar Disks in IC 348 and The Primordial-to-Debris Disk Transition

We investigate the evolution of ∼ 3 Myr-old MIPS-detected circumstellar disks in IC 348 that may be in an intermediate stage between primordial, optically-thick disks of gas/dust and debris disks characteristic of the final stages of planet formation. We demonstrate that these anemic disks are not a homogenous class of objects corresponding to a unique evolutionary state. Rather, such disks aro...
