Lhc: the World's Largest Vacuum Systems Being Commissioned at Cern
نویسنده
چکیده
When it switches on in 2008, the 26.7 km Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, will have the world's largest vacuum system operating over a wide range of pressures and employing an impressive array of vacuum technologies. This system is composed by 54 km of UHV vacuum for the circulating beams and 50 km of insulation vacuum around the cryogenic magnets and the liquid helium transfer lines. Over the 54 km of UHV beam vacuum, 48 km of this are at cryogenic temperature (1.9 K). The remaining 6 km of beam vacuum containing the insertions for "cleaning" the proton beams, radiofrequency cavities for accelerating the protons as well as beam-monitoring equipment is at ambient temperature and uses non-evaporable getter (NEG) coatings a vacuum technology that was born and industrialized at CERN. The pumping scheme is completed using 780 ion pumps to remove noble gases and to provide pressure interlocks to the 303 vacuum safety valves. Pressure readings are provided by 170 Bayard-Alpert gauges and 1084 gauges (Pirani and cold cathode Penning). The cryogenic insulation vacuums while technically less demanding, impress by their size and volume: 50 km and 15000 m3. Once cooled at 1.9 K, the cryopumping allows reaching pressure in the 10 Pa range. This paper describes the vacuum systems and the challenges of the installation and commissioning phases.

Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will provide excellent opportunity to study the production and decay of heavy mesons and baryons with high statistics. We aim at the heavy mesons in this work and calculate their fragmentation functions consistent with this machine and present their total fragmentation probabilities and average fragmentation parameters.

The components for the LHC cryostats and interconnections are supplied by European industry. The manufacturing, assembly and testing of these components in accordance with CERN technical specifications require a close collaboration and dedicated approach from the suppliers. This paper presents the different phases of design, manufacturing, testing and integration of four LHC cryostat components...

The TPC is the central detector of the CERN-LHC experiment ALICE. It is the largest TPC ever built with a gas volume of ~90 m and 557568 readout channels. The LHC is scheduled to commence operation in 2007 with pp-collisions. Before installation underground inside the ALICE L3 magnet, the TPC including its auxiliary systems and services, i.e., gas system, temperature monitoring system, drift ve...

The assembly of the first version of the LHC test string has now been completed and commissioned. It makes use of the prototype short straight section assembled at CERN with its quadrupole and of the first two 10 m long dipoles manufactured by industry. The LHC string will be used to study phenomena which can be observed only when the different components are assembled in a prototype LHC cell, ...
متن کاملThe Lhc Control System
A new control system for the LHC machine has been developed building on the existing controls infrastructure of the CERN accelerators. While the primary target for this development is the LHC the aim is to deploy this system on the other accelerators at CERN starting with the LHC pre-injectors. All layers of the control system have been redeveloped. In the Front Ends FESA is a new software infr...
