The primary objective of this project is to create a projected image 3D printer with the ability to produce a three-dimensional part. The system utilizes an ordinary overhead projector to project black and white images onto a film of UV curable photopolymer in order to selectively cure/harden the polymer. This project is focused around meeting the following objectives, (a) design a movable platform upon which the 3D part is printed; (b) determine the best method of adjusting the image size and focus; (c) create a procedure for generating the sequence of black and white images; (d) research different photopolymers that are available; and (e) design and construct an optics system capable of transmitting light that will cure the selected photopolymer. The fabricated part consists of a number of layers where each layer would cure within a specified timeframe. This project is a continuation of the work completed by two previous MSD teams for Dr. Denis Cormier. This year’s team has made fundamental changes to the resin bath design, the software for running the program, and the build platform on which the polymer is cured. The current system was designed with the user in mind. The largest improvement on previous team’s work is the ability of the system to function independently using a single interface to control all fundamental elements of the system (see Figure I). These elements include stereolithography (STL) file manipulation, motor control and image projection.
