Application-Dependent Discourse Management for Natural Language Interfaces: An Empirical Investigation
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents results from a refined analysis of a series of Wizard of Oz-experiments with focus on discourse management. The study is part of a larger project aimed at designing a general natural language interface. It is argued that a natural language interface needs different referent res olution mechanisms for different combinations of background systems and scenarios. I present three mechanisms that can be used: proximity, object hierarchy and goal-directed control. Finally I suggest the use of a Natu ral Language Interface Management System (NLIMS) for customization of natural language interfaces to different applications.

A Method for Development of Dialogue Managers for Natural Language Interfaces
This paper describes a method for the development of dialogue managers for natural language interfaces. A dialogue manager is presented designed on the basis of both a theoretical investigation of models for dialogue management and an analysis of empirical material. It is argued that for natural language interfaces many of the human interaction phenomena accounted for in, for instance, plan-bas...
متن کاملDiscourse Representation and Discourse Management for a Natural Language Dialogue System
In this paper we discuss some requirements on natural language interfaces that are needed for supporting connected dialogue, and propose methods for meeting these requirements in the context of a system that has been developed at our department over the last couple of years. On the basis of data collected in Wizard-of-Oz simulations we argue that the dynamic discourse representation needed for ...
متن کاملA Dialogue Grammar for the Cars Database
We describe an empirically based approach tothe computational management of dialogues. It isbased on an explicit theoretically motivated positionregarding the status of computational models, where itis claimed that computational models of discourse canonly be about computers’ processing of language. Thedialogue model is based on an extensive analysis ofcollected dial...
متن کاملEmpirical Studies Of Discourse Representations For Natural Language Interfaces
We present the results from a series of experiments aimed at uncovering the discourse structure of man-machine communication in natural language (Wizard of Oz experiments). The results suggest the existence of different classes of dialogue situations, requiring computational discourse representations of various complexity. Important factors seem to be the number of different permissible tasks i...
متن کاملTowards Friendlier User Interfaces for Expert Systems
Much research in computational linguistics and artificial intelligence has gone into characterizing natural language discourse structures, developing discourse models, and using these to develop more useful natural language interfaces to databases and expert systems. However, this knowledge about the nature of discourse has not been used to any advantage in graphical expert system interfaces. T...
