چکیده

We present a novel approach to intonation modelling for speech synthesis based on a two-layer technique. The generator component of a concept-to-speech system produces an abstract phonological representation of intonation based on GToBI interpreting the linguistic and discourse information available. This abstract representation must be translated into concrete acoustic parameters. The paper describes how this mapping is achieved with the use of stylized F0 contours. Modelling intonation, i.e., specifying adequate fundamental frequency (F0) contours , remains a challenging task for speech synthesis. In our concept-to-speech system VieCtoS rich linguistic information is available for utterances to be produced. This enables the production of natural and functionally adequate intonation. To this end the generator of the system has to produce an abstract phonological representation of intonation that in turn must be translated into concrete acoustic parameters. To qualitatively describe intonation, we employ the Tone Sequence Model (TSM) 10] which has become the prevalent phono-logical model. Thus, insights and results from current linguistic research can be directly integrated into our work on speech synthesis. In particular, we are using GToBI (German ToBI) 14] an oospring of the original ToBI (Tone and Break Indices) 3] throughout the linguistic generation process and the phonological post-processing 2], which comprises the following inventory of tones: H* `Peak accent' L* `Low accent' L+H* `Steep rise' L*+H`Rise', peak behind accented syllable H+L* Downstep to low range H+!H* Downstep to mid range L? H? Phrase tones L% H% Boundary tones ? ? ? The work reported here has been carried out within the project \Phonology-Acoustics-Conversion for Concept-to-Speech" (FWF P10822) funded by the Austrian Fonds zur FF orderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung. Phonetic and phonological imitation of intonation in two varieties of Italian

The aim of this study was to test whether both phonetic and phonological representations of intonation can be rapidly modified when imitating utterances belonging to a different regional variety of the same language. Our main hypothesis was that tonal alignment, just as other phonetic features of speech, would be rapidly modified by Italian speakers when imitating pitch accents of a different (...

GToBI – a phonological system for the transcription of German intonation 1 GToBI - a phonological system for the transcription of German intonation

In this paper we present an updated version of GToBI, an annotation scheme for capturing aspects of the intonation of Standard German within the autosegmentalmetrical framework. We concentrate on the tonal part of the system, providing an inventory of commonly occurring contours, and discuss issues which are still controversial within the framework, such as leading tones and phrase accents.

A system of stylized intonation contours in German

Modeling intonation, i.e., specifying adequate fundamental frequency (F0) contours, remains a challenging task for speech synthesis systems. This paper discusses the development of a system for phonetically specifying intonation contours for German. It deals with the problem of translating an abstract phonological representation of intonation namely the tone-sequence model into a concrete phone...

A new model of intonation for use with speech synthesis and recognition

This paper describes a synthesis from analysis scheme for producing natural sounding intonation for speech synthesis. The paper presents a new method of describing F0 contours in terms of three basic phonetic intonation elements. Details are given of an automatic system for labelling F0 contours, which could be used for speech recognition purposes. Current work on extracting a phonological desc...

Pitch Range Variation in English Tonal Contrasts: Continuous or Categorical?

The importance of pitch range variation for intonational meaning and theory is well known; however, whether pitch range is a phonetic dimension which is treated categorically in English remains unclear. To test this possibility, three intonation continua varying in pitch range were constructed which had endpoints with contrastive representations under autosegmental-metrical (AM) theory: H* vs. ...
