چکیده

Reports on the role of retinoids in cell metabolism can be traced back almost a century, when the then-unknown vitamin A present in dietary lipids was found to be essential for normal growth {McCollum and Davis 1913; Osborne and Mendel 1913}. Since then, the profound effect of retinoic acid IRA}, a derivative of vitamin A, on development and differentiation has been documented in numerous publications. The effect of retinoids is mediated by nuclear receptors acting as ligand-controlled transcription factors. Although the mechanisms of retinoid-induced trans-activation are many-tiered and might have seemed at times hopelessly complex, recent results have brought some order to a confusing picture.

9-cis-Retinoic Acid and 1,25-dihydroxy Vitamin D3 Improve the Differentiation of Neural Stem Cells into Oligodendrocytes through the Inhibition of the Notch and Wnt Signaling Pathways

Background: Differentiating oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) into oligodendrocytes could be improved by inhibiting signaling pathways such as Wnt and Notch. 9-cis-retinoic acid (9-cis-RA) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25[OH]2D3) can ameliorate oligodendrogenesis. We investigated whether they could increase oligodendrogenesis by inhibiting the Wnt and Notch signaling pathways. Methods: Co...

Induction of Apoptosis by Retinoids and Retinoic Acid Receptor g-Selective Compounds in Mouse Thymocytes through a Novel Apoptosis Pathway

Retinoic acids are morphogenic signaling molecules that are derived from vitamin A and involved in a variety of tissue functions. Two groups of their nuclear receptors have been identified: retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and retinoic acid X receptors (RXRs). All-trans retinoic acid is the high affinity ligand for RARs, and 9-cis retinoic acid also binds to RXRs with high affinity. In cells at h...

9-cis-retinoic acid inhibits activation-driven T-cell apoptosis: implications for retinoid X receptor involvement in thymocyte development.

Retinoic acid is a morphogenetic signaling molecule derived from vitamin A and involved in vertebrate development. Two groups of receptors, retinoic acid receptors and retinoid X receptors (RXRs), have been identified. All-trans-retinoic acid is the high-affinity ligand for retinoic acid receptors, and 9-cis-retinoic acid additionally binds RXRs with high affinity. Here we report that although ...

Retinoids Regulate the Formation and Degradation of Gap Junctions in Androgen-Responsive Human Prostate Cancer Cells

The retinoids, the natural or synthetic derivatives of Vitamin A (retinol), are essential for the normal development of prostate and have been shown to modulate prostate cancer progression in vivo as well as to modulate growth of several prostate cancer cell lines. 9-cis-retinoic acid and all-trans-retinoic acid are the two most important metabolites of retinol. Gap junctions, formed of protein...
