چکیده

Aims. We challenge the accepted distance of 3.2 kpc of GRO J1655-40. We present VLT-UVES spectroscopic observations to estimate the absorption toward the source, and determine a maximum distance of GRO J1655-40. Methods. We show that the accepted value of 3.2 kpc is taken for granted by many authors. We retrieved in the ESO archive UVES spectra taken in April 2004 when GRO J1655-40 was in quiescence to determine the spectral type of the secondary star. For the first time we build a flux-calibrated mean (UVES) spectrum of GRO J1655-40 and compare its observed flux to that of five nearby stars of similar spectral types. We strengthen our results with the traditional pair method, using published photometric data of the comparison stars. Results. We show that the distance of 3.2 kpc is questionable. We determine a spectral type F6IV for the secondary star. We demonstrate in details that the distance of GRO J1655-40 must be smaller than 1.7 kpc. Conclusions. The runaway black hole GRO J1655-40 could be associated with the open cluster NGC 6242 which is located at 1.0±0.1 kpc from the Sun. At D ≤ 1.7 kpc the jets are not a superluminal, and GRO J1655-40 becomes one of the closest known black holes to the Sun.

Do X-ray Binary Spectral State Transition Luminosities Vary?

We tabulate the luminosities of the soft-to-hard state transitions of all X-ray binaries for which there exist good X-ray flux measurements at the time of the transition, good distance estimates, and good mass estimates for the compact star. We show that the state transition luminosities are at about 1-4% of the Eddington rate, markedly smaller than those typically quoted in the literature, wit...

Optically thick super-Eddington winds in Galactic superluminal sources

A model of major ejection events in Galactic superluminal sources GRO J 1655-40 and GRS 1915-105 is proposed, in which episodes of e−e+ pair creation give rise to the formation of optically thick outflows accelerating protons to the limiting Lorentz factor of order 2-3. Probable source of e−e+ pairs is pion production in nucleon collisions. Subsequent deceleration of ejecta and formation of rad...

The runaway black hole GRO J 1655 - 40 ⋆

We have used the Hubble Space Telescope to measure the motion in the sky and compute the galactocentric orbit of the black hole X-ray binary GRO J1655-40. The system moves with a runaway space velocity of 112± 18 km s in a highly eccentric (e = 0.34± 0.05) orbit. The black hole was formed in the disk at a distance greater than 3 kpc from the Galactic centre and must have been shot to such eccen...

The quiescent light curve and evolutionary state of GRO J 1655 – 40

We present ellipsoidal light-curve fits to the quiescent B, V , R and I light curves of GRO J1655–40 (Nova Scorpii 1994). The fits are based on a simple model consisting of a Roche-lobe filling secondary and an accretion disc around the black-hole primary. Unlike previous studies, no assumptions are made about the interstellar extinction or the distance to the source; instead these are determin...

We suggest Nova Sco 1994 (GRO 1655-40) as a possible relic of a Gamma Ray Burster (GRB) and Type Ib supernova (SN) explosion, showing that there is evidence both that the black hole was spun up by accretion and that there was a supernova explosion. We use the disc energy delivered from the rotational energy of the black hole to power the SN, and give arguments that roughly equal energy goes int...
