WZ Sagittae - an old dwarf nova

چکیده
We model the evolution of the accretion disk of WZ Sagittae during the long quiescence. We find that the large amount of mass in the disk derived from the outburst luminosity is a severe constraint and demands values of αc ≈ 0.001 in contradiction to some recent suggestions. We include in our computations the formation of an inner disk hole and the growth of the disk due to redistribution of angular momentum. We find a new mode of disk evolution. The disk is quasi-stationary. Only about half of the mass transfered from the companion star flows through the disk, the other half is needed to build up the steadily growing outer disk. When the 3:1 resonance radius is reached the disk growth ends. From then on all transferred matter flows inward, the surface density increases, leading to an outburst within a few years. We predict superhumps at low luminosity during this last phase. We discuss X-rays expected, the white dwarf mass and distance to WZ Sagittae.

FUSE and HST/STIS spectra of the dwarf nova WZ Sge, obtained during and following the early superoutburst of July 2001 over a time span of 20 months, monitor changes in the components of the system during its different phases. The synthetic spectral fits to the data indicate a cooling in response to the outburst of about 12,000K, from ≈ 28, 000K down to ≈ 16, 000K. The cooling time scale Visiti...

The 2001 outburst of WZ Sagittae has shown the most compelling evidence yet for an enhancement of the mass transfer rate from the donor star during a dwarf nova outburst in the form of hot-spot brightening. I show that even in this extreme case, the brightening can be attributed to tidal heating near the interaction point of an accretion stream with the expanding edge of an eccentric accretion ...

We carried out optical spectroscopic observations of the most enigmatic dwarf nova WZ Sge in 11 nights during the 2001 superoutburst. Our observations covered the period from the initial phase several hours before the maximum to the ninth maximum of the rebrightening phase. The first spectrum shows absorption lines of H i (except for Hα), He i, and Na i, as well as emission lines of Heii , C ii...

We argue that quiescent WZ Sge is a rapidly spinning magnetic rotator in which most of the matter transfered from the secondary is ejected from the system. Assuming that the observed 27.87 s oscillation period is due to the spinning white dwarf we propose that the other observed principal period of 28.96 s is a beat due to reprocessing of the rotating white dwarf beam on plasma blobs in Kepleri...
متن کاملWhite Dwarf Heating and Subsequent Cooling in Dwarf Nova Outbursts
We follow the time dependent thermal evolution of a white dwarf (WD) undergoing sudden accretion in a dwarf nova outburst, using both simulations and analytic estimates. The post-outburst lightcurve clearly separates into early times when the WD flux is high, and late times when the flux is near the quiescent level. The break between these two regimes, occurring at a time of order the outburst ...
