Prevalence, mechanism and management of atrial fibrillation in athletes

چکیده
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most commonly encountered arrhythmia in clinical practice with an estimated prevalence of 0.4% to 1% in the general population [1], increasing with age to 8% in those older than 80 years [2]. The recognised risk factors for developing AF include age, structural heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism [3]. However, the mechanisms underlying the onset and maintenance of AF in patients younger than 60 years in whom no cardiovascular disease or any other known causal factor is present are yet to be clarified. This condition is termed lone AF [4], and may be responsible for as many as 30% of patients with paroxysmal AF seeking medical attention [5, 6]. It is well known that regular exercise is beneficial to health and reduces the risks of cardiovascular diseases [7, 8]. However, recent studies suggest that longterm endurance exercise may increase the incidence of AF [9–16]. This review article is intended to analyse the possible links between AF and endurance sport practice, the pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for this association and the recommended therapeutic options.

Effects Of Fast Pathway Ablation On The Concealment Zone And Electrophysiological Behavior Of AV-Node During Atrial Fibrillation.
Objectives: Dual pathways have a determinant role in the occurrence of atrio nodal tachyarrhythmia (AVNRT). The aim of present study is to determine the role of slow pathway (SP) in the concealment zone and protective role of AV node during atrial fibrillation (AF). Material &Methods: In 7 isolated nodal rabbit preparation zone of concealment and concealed conduction is quantified by Specif...
متن کاملAtrial Fibrillation In Athletes: Pathophysiology, Clinical Presentation, Evaluation and Management.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in athletes, especially in middle-aged athletes. Studies have demonstrated that athletes who engage in endurance sports such as runners, cyclists and skiers are more prone to AF than other athletes. The effects of exercise on the onset and progression of AF is complex. Triggers of AF in athletes may include atrial ectopy and sports ...
متن کاملIntravenous Methylprednisolone, a Possible Cause of the Atrial Fibrillation
We are presenting a case illustrating atrial fibrillation (AF) following the use of methylprednisolone in a patient with pelvic and femur fracture. A 48- year- old man with no significant past medical history, was admitted to the emergency department after injury in a car accident. He suffered a multiple bone fracture with chief complaints of pain and shortness of breath. He was transfer...
متن کاملAcute direct effects of cyclosporine on extracellular field potential of isolated rabbit AV node during experimental atrial fibrillation
Introduction: Previous studies have indicated a relationship between MPTP pore and AV nodal rate-dependent properties. The aim of present study was to determine acute direct effects of cyclosporine on extracellular field potential of isolated rabbit AV node during experimental atrial fibrillation. Methods: In one group of male New Zealand rabbits (1.5-2.5 kg) cumulative concentrations of cyc...
متن کاملAssessment of P-wave indices as atrial fibrillation predictors in psoriasis patients
Background: Psoriasis is a prevalent chronic T cell mediated inflammatory skin disorder. Recent studies have reported an increase in the incidence of arrhythmia in psoriasis patients who run an excessive risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. P-wave dispersion (PWD) and duration are important electrocardiographic (ECG) markers employed to anticipate the risk of atrial arrhythmi...

OBJECTIVES In the present study we assessed the distribution and clinical significance of left atrial (LA) size in the context of athlete's heart and the differential diagnosis from structural heart disease, as well as the proclivity to supraventricular arrhythmias. BACKGROUND The prevalence, clinical significance, and long-term arrhythmic consequences of LA enlargement in competitive athlete...
