چکیده

Biology-Inspired techniques for Self-Organization in dynamic Networks (BISON) is a three-year Shared-Cost RTD Project (IST-2001-38923) funded by the Future and Emerging Technologies initiative of the Information Society Technologies Programme of the European Commission. It runs from January 2003 until December 2005. The objective of BISON is the design and implementation of algorithms for management and control in modern network environments. These environments are typically large, complex, highly dynamic, and heterogeneous. To cope with these challenges, network algorithms should have fully distributed and self-organizing architectures, and be adaptive, robust, and scalable. The central claim of BISON is that the observation and analysis of complex adaptive systems found in Nature can be a major source of inspiration to design algorithms with such characteristics. In what follows, we first describe the objectives of the project. Then we present the specific classes of networks that have been investigated, and discuss some of the results obtained so far in conjunction with the biological mechanisms that have provided useful design guidelines. More details can be found at http://www.cs.unibo.it/bison.

Biology-Inspired techniques for Self Organization in dynamic Networks Architecture of the Simulation Environment

This document describes the architectural design of the simulation environment for the BISON project. Given the different simulation requirements (in terms of scalability, network models, level of detail) needed by ad-hoc networks and overlay networks, we propose two different architectures. The simulation architecture for ad-hoc networks builds up on an existing packet-level simulator, namely ...

The BISON Project (Research Outlook)

Modern distributed information systems are gaining an increasing importance in our every day lives. As access to networked applications become omnipresent through PC’s, hand-held and wireless devices, more and more economical, social and cultural transactions are becoming dependent on the reliability and availability of distributed applications. As a consequence of the increasing demands placed...

Biology-Inspired techniques for Self Organization in dynamic Networks

We present a tabular way of organizing ideas and results from studies of complex adaptive systems (CAS), operating on some network structure to implement some desired function. The term “matrix” is then used loosely: the tabular structure which we present has three dimensions, ranging over the function implmented, the network structure (here stated more precisely in terms of topology), and the ...

Performance Analysis of Bio-Inspired Routing Protocols based on Random Waypoint Mobility Model

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a non-centralised, multihop, wireless network that lacks a common infrastructure and hence it needs self-organisation. The biggest challenge in MANETs is to find a path between communicating nodes, which is the MANET routing problem. Biology-inspired techniques such as ant colony optimisation (ACO) which have proven to be very adaptable in other problem domain...
