Consumer Acceptance of the Use of Vaccination to Control Boar Taint
نویسنده
چکیده
Global population growth and increasing demand for pig meat will continue to place pressure on the world’s pork supply. To meet demand the pig industry must become more efficient. One way to increase production efficiency would be to raise boars rather than castrates . However, pork from some boars can have an offensive smell and taste, known as ‘boar taint’. Because of this most of the world’s male pigs are physically castrated early in life. While this is effective is controlling boar taint there are issues with physical castration that make it undesirable. Compared to boars, castrates are less feed efficient, often grow slower and are fatter with less lean meat. In many countries, especially within Europe, there is also growing concern about the negative animal welfare aspects of physical castration, which is generally performed without the use of anaesthesia.

Consumer response to the possible use of a vaccine method to control boar taint v. physical piglet castration with anaesthesia: a quantitative study in four European countries.
In most European countries, male piglets being reared for meat are physically castrated without anaesthesia in order to avoid boar taint and to safeguard sensory meat quality. This method is increasingly criticised for its violation of piglet welfare. Alternative methods are being researched and castration with anaesthesia or analgesia and vaccination (immunisation) against gonadotropin-releasi...
متن کاملConsumer studies on sensory acceptability of boar taint: a review.
Boar taint can be found in meat from boars and affects consumer acceptability of pork. The aim of this review is: (1) to describe different aspects of the existing methodologies used in consumer studies when evaluating boar taint from a sensory point of view, (2) to draw conclusions on different studies regarding the acceptability of meat from entire males, and (3) to discuss a possible harmoni...
متن کاملVaccination of boars with a GnRH vaccine (Improvac) eliminates boar taint and increases growth performance.
Peri- and postpubertal boars accumulate substances (e.g., androstenone and skatole) in their fatty tissue that are responsible for boar taint in pork. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of a GnRH vaccine, Improvac, in eliminating boar taint. Three hundred male (200 intact boars, 100 barrows) crossbred (Large White x Landrace) pigs were used in a 2 x 3 factorially arranged ex...
متن کاملInfluence of soiling on boar taint in boars.
It has been suggested that skatole, one of the main compounds responsible for boar taint, can be lowered by keeping pigs clean, as skatole can be absorbed through skin and/or lungs (Hansen, Larsen, Jensen, HansenMoller & Bartongade, 1994). With this experiment, we further investigated this hypothesis by comparing extremely clean with extremely dirty animals with regard to the occurrence of boar...
متن کاملEvaluation of various boar taint detection methods.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of various boar taint detection methods, measure the relationship between them and identify possible points of improvement for boar taint detection. The methods used to evaluate boar taint in the carcasses of 448 entire male pigs and 17 barrows were the hot iron method (n = 442), a standardised (n = 323) and home (n = 58) consumer meat-evalu...
