چکیده

We study a polling model where we want to achieve a balance between the fairness of the waiting times and the efficiency of the system. For this purpose, we introduce the κ-gated service discipline. It is a hybrid of the classical gated and exhausted disciplines, and consists of using κi gated service phases at queue i before the server switches to the next queue. We derive the distributions and means of the waiting times, a pseudo conservation law for the weighted sum of the mean waiting times, and the fluid limits of the waiting times. Our goal is to optimize the κi’s so as to minimize the differences in the mean waiting times, i.e. to achieve maximal fairness, without giving up too much on the efficiency of the system. From the fluid limits we derive a heuristic rule for setting the κi’s. In a numerical study the heuristic is shown to perform well.

Fairness and Efficiency for Polling Models with the κ-Gated Service Discipline

We study a polling model where we want to achieve a balance between the fairness of the waiting times and the efficiency of the system. For this purpose, we introduce a novel service discipline: the κ-gated service discipline. It is a hybrid of the classical gated and exhausted disciplines, and consists of using κi consecutive gated service phases at queue i before the server switches to the ne...

Polling Models with Two-Stage Gated Service: Fairness Versus Efficiency

We consider an asymmetric cyclic polling system with general service-time and switchover time distributions with so-called two-stage gated service at each queue, an interleaving scheme that aims to enforce fairness among the different customer classes. For this model, we (1) obtain a pseudo-conservation law, (2) describe how the mean delay at each of the queues can be obtained recursively via t...

Optimization of M G 1 Queue with Vacation (TECHNICAL NOTE)

This paper reports on the minimization of the average waiting time of the customers in the M/G/1 queue with vacation. Explicit formula for the unknown service parameter of a particular customer has been obtained by considering the exhaustive service discipline in the case of multi-user with unlimited service system. Moreover, results in case of partially gated and gated service disciplines unde...

Unified analysis of BMAP/G/1 cyclic polling models

This paper presents an analysis of the BMAP/G/1 cyclic polling model with gated and exhaustive service disciplines. The applied methodology is based on the separation of the analysis into service discipline independent and dependent parts. New expressions are derived for the vector generating function of the stationary number of customers and for its mean in terms of vector quantities depending...

Polling in a closed network

We consider a closed queueing network with a xed number of customers, where a single server moves cyclically between N stations, rending service in each station according to some given discipline (Gated, Exhaustive, or the Globally Gated regime). When service of a customer (message) ends in station j, it is routed to station k with probability P jk. We derive explicit expressions for the probab...
