Phonetic Detail in Phonology: Towards a unified account of assimilation and coarticulation

چکیده
1. Assimilation and coarticulation Assimilation and coarticulation both involve extending the duration of some property or feature. The similarities between these phenomena can be seen by comparing Basque vowel raising and vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in a language like English. In Basque the low vowel /a/ is raised to [e] following a high vowel. This gives rise to alternations in the form of the definite suffix, /-a/ (de Rijk 1970):

Phonetic Detail in Phonology: Evidence from assimilation and coarticulation
Assimilation and coarticulation both involve extending the duration of some property or feature. The similarities between these phenomena can be seen by comparing Basque vowel raising with vowel -to -vowel coarticulation in a language like English. In Basque the low vowel Ial is raised to [el following a high vowel. This gives rise to alternations in the form of the definite suffix, I -a/ (de R...
متن کاملSpanish complex onsets and the phonetics–phonology interface*
This study analyzes cross-dialectal phonetic variation in Spanish complex onsets in light of recent work on the phonetics–phonology interface. Two basic patterns of obstruent-rhotic cluster realization, vowel intrusion and coarticulation-induced rhotic assibilation, receive a phonetically-motivated explanation in terms of the temporal coordination of consonantal gestures, within the framework o...
متن کاملScalar and categorical phenomena in a unified model of phonetics and phonology*
Standard phonological representations provide only a very coarse-grained specification of the phonetic properties of a word or phrase. That is, representation in terms of standard phonological features and timing units corresponds approximately to the level of detail contained in a broad phonetic transcription, and the representation of time is in many ways even more limited. For example, consi...

Conklin, Jenna T. M.A., Purdue University, May 2015. The Interaction of Gradient and Categorical Processes of Long-Distance Vowel-to-Vowel Assimilation in Kazan Tatar. Major Professor: Dr. Mary Niepokuj. Vowel harmony and vowel-to-vowel coarticulation are long-distance assimilatory processes wherein certain vowels trigger systematic changes in adjacent vowels; harmony effects phonological chang...
